I realise as per fluid mosiac cell membrane model , the membrane has protiens arranged so that the water repelling end face each other. I have also read about different ion channels and have seen videos how the work

    I read that
" upon activation, ion channels form water filled pores that traverse the hyrodophobic lipid membrane in which they are embedded"

Based on what I See, ion channels are like gates that open and close based on ( voltage or structure. Can someone please explain what this means and its use?
