    4. A patient has a total body water volume of 40L, an intracellular fluid volume (ICF) of 27.5L and extracellular fluid (ECF) volume of 12.5L. The total number of osmoles of solute in the patient’s body is 11.8. She is given an intravenous infusion of 1L 150mosM NaCl (clinically known as ‘half normal’ saline). NaCl is a impermeant solute.

    a) What does ‘impermeant’ mean as applied to NaCl? (2 marks)

    b) What will be the osmolarity of the patient’s ECF and ICF before the infusion is given? (2 marks)

    c) After the infusion is given, equilibrium has been reached (and you can assume no excretion has occurred), will the following increase, decrease or stay the same?

    • Total body water volume (1 mark)

    • Total body osmolarity (calculate the value after the infusion) (3 marks)

    • ECF and ICF volumes (2 marks)

    • ECF and ICF osmolarities (2 marks)
In each case, justify your answers fully.

:? :? :? d) Would these changes be desirable in this patient? Explain (2 marks)

The point of questions like these is to test your knowledge and comprehension, not to test ours. If you can't do the research and find the answers yourself, I would suggest that you may not be cut out for this.

Here is a place to start:

    Wikipedia: Saline

There are references at the end and if all else fails, there is Google or- and I know this may sound crazy- there are your teacher/lecturer and your own course notes to consult.
