Last week I had to have a wisdom tooth removed and that made me wonder about them. Why are these teeth in our gums if there usually is no room for them in our mouths? Are they left over from a time when our skulls were bigger or shaped differently and we did have room for them in our mouths? Why are the roots of them longer than the roots of our other teeth?

Soft diet during childhood decreases the size of the jaw bone.

It's not necessarily an evolutionary process we are witnessing as such. Merely a change in dietary habits and evolution failing the catch up, because it isn't really killing anyone in a major way before they get a chance to reproduce.

I didn't know they had much longer roots.
