Why are valves found in the veins, but never in the arteries?

Is it because arteries don't have to defy gravity?

you MUST be forgetting some of the most important arteries in your body then, The Aorta and the Carotid arteries.

As AM says, some arteries are valved.

But, in general, it's because in arteries the blood is under higher pressure from the heart beating, and is incredibly unlikely to move in the wrong direction.
