I believe Darwin thought that human evolution (at least the increase in brain size) occurred due to sexual selection. Do scientists still believe this?

Some do, certainly. It's still a matter of some debate exactly how and why we evolved the traits we have that make us different from the other great apes. I personally can't think of any extremely convincing evidence that sexual selection played a major role in the evolution of intelligence, but I haven't read a whole lot on the topic.

Man can will nothing unless he has first understood that he must count on no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth.
    ~Jean-Paul Sartre
