Are humans still evolving? With the inventions of modern day life that aid us in all most everything that we do are we still evolving? Survival of the fittest. We are the fittest and we aren't competing with anybody so why would we need to evolve?

The sudden reduction of selective pressure also contributes to evolution, which can be thought of as changes in allele frequency.

There is more to evolution that just 'survival of the fittest'. As the environment around us changes we change as well.

fit isn't defined as whatever you think should be fit.

G'day from the land of ozzzzzzzz

    Evolution can never stop.

We mix and we exchange genes.

There are viruses out there that many will die from and only the fittest will live and carry that gene against that virus.

When end of days comes to us via man's hand or the sun going off there will be a change. That change will dtermine the gene pool.

i think we are still evolving, but as our lives get more and more cushy, we may evolve away all of our survival traits. like the bad guys in the video game half life. They are so used to people doing things for them, that they are now basically just slugs wiith telekinesis (obviously this is a veery theoretical and extreme case of it)

You can't evolve away survival traits.

    It's a logical contradiction.

    Chuck Norris.

    from wikipedia:
    a son named Mike
    His daughter, Dina
    second son, Eric
twins in 2001: Dakota Alan Norris, a boy, and Danilee Kelly Norris, a girl.

    6 grandchildren.

Chuck isn't doing too badly in the survival game. So far 11 offspring, with most already in the second generation.

Of course his genes are also diluted in the second generation, even more so than in the first.

It could have been worse for Chuck.

Maybe we'll all turn into sperm-donating med students. IIRC there are some anonymous fellas with over 500 offspring.

Actually there was this one director of a spermbank which had send out mostly his own sperm instead of the requested sperm.

He will be the Genghis Khan of this Millennium.

okay stupid question from a stupid physicist time:

When would the adaptations (tonsils, wisdom teeth, appendix etc) be considered avolution?

Wisdom teeth is a tricky topic. And any simple answer that is given is actually going to be wrong.

The loss of wisdom teeth has nothing to do with use and adaptive selection as such, but is probably related to developmental constraints in patterning.

This is because of this paper:

    http://www.nature.com/nature/journal...ture06153.html

Predicting evolutionary patterns of mammalian teeth from development

And recently I saw the new data on human and primate dentitions at the evo-devo meeting in Ghent.

We are losing the third molar due to developmental constraints, not because of direct adaptive selection.

The cusp shape pattern of the molars determine actually also the size of second and third molar, and at the extreme of the spectrum the third molar is lost.
