Can a lot of social problems nowadays be put down to the media rather than a load of psycho analysis,

Chavs trying to imitate gangsters or thugs they see on TV or video games.

Emo culture due to increasing popularity of the music.

Homosexuality due to the increased visibility of it on TV.

    etc.

What are peoples views on this idea?

In my opinion the media may actually be the equivalent to religion in somewhat of a sense-especially fashion. For example the media and slimness with females, if you are not thin you are not beautiful Therefore to be beautiful you must be thin. That aside, the media influences us greatley. Has anyone seen Command & Conquer the game? The terrorist leader of the Brotherhood of Nod-Kane controls many countries by manipulation of the media, folks believe what the media tell them to believe, whos to say someone is not telling the media what to believe? Of course thats another conspiracy theory.

I think the matter however will always be able to be performed using psychology as that science will be able to explain why the media is so believeable. I did psychology once on this and how the media influences pro and anti social behaviour. But social backgrounds are bigger influences than media. I think the media is just a catalyst to behaviours of certain people, for instance 'if its on TV, it must be OK'. I believe that is the general gist of what some people may think, but to others it may be deeper. As always with these matters there is never one true way of looking at it.

So in answer to your question the media is not to blame, I reckon the way that children are raised into society determines the way they are. Of course that is a nurture argument.

I don't think so. Social problems have always existed, long before the TV became popular.
Homosexuality due to the increased visibility of it on TV.
Homosexuality has always existed, particularly in cultures with a high level of sexual freedom.
