    O.W.C. (OFF WORLD COLONIZATION)

Wether it be Mars the earths moon, one of the moons of Jupiter or perhaps a series of orbiting space stations - Its not the science of terraforming that is my inquiry. I suppose that what I am curious about is the kind of social ramifications this might have. I can only assume that human beings will eventually expand beyond the boundries of our own planet. And of course when I say "expand" I'm talking about the migration of the masses. I just wonder in what sort of practical manner will this take place? First of all, what will be the primary incentive? Pollution? Overpopulation? What will be the factors invovled in determining what kinds of people, as a mass collective, would be best suitable for inhabiting these new colonies?

I think one of the bigger questions is; Will space travel or O.W.C. become commercial? If it does, how will this politically effect the separation of our major nations here on Earth? Will governments loose power? Under who's authority - under what political jurisdiction will a person be in once they've taken residence in an off world colony?

If governments do maintain control, then it would simply be a matter of obtaining new territory. Yet, of course, that would or could lead to terrtorial disputes. How likely would it be for the U.S. and Russia to once again butt heads over something like lunar surface area?

And speaking of the United States of America, Will history repeat itself with O.W.C.? Is it possible that people of different nationalities could come togather on an off world colony and form their very own city-state?

Space Pilgrims, Space Colonials, Space Frontiersmen......Space Cowboys.

I understand that the possibilities here are endless and the speculation is indefinite. But if anyone here in this forum has any broad theories or predictions as to how O.W.C. might play itself out, please - by all means - share them.

Just my opinion, but it will end up like Earth. It will be fine at first, but as the influx of people continues to grow, they will begin to form groups with each being governed by one of their own. Add religion to the mix and eventually you will have killings, etc etc etc.

If it doesn't work here... It won't work there.

On Earth colonisation took place because people were fleeing from something: famine, persecution, boredom, lack of opportunity, instability, war, etc.
People fleeing from anything tend to be better motivated and focused than the stay-at-homes. This produces obvious benefits in terms of the vitality and progress of the colonised area.

So you think that O.W.C. would progress faster if the threat level here on earth was higher?
