A very simple question. Is your reply to someone else's post influenced by your perception of that person, or do you reply solely on the persons post? Please be honest.

Since it is you Cat, I shall be honest in my reply. With most other posters I should lie through my teeth. 8)

To be honest.. both. When I read a post I always treat the poster as if he (or she) is standing right in front of me. I put a face on him and if he has a friendly attitude then I would have no problems replying. It doesn't matter how forcefull he wants to be to prove his point, I would still join in any debate.

If the poster seems unfriendly, or arrogant, then I perceive that person as a bully and although I would still read what he has to say, I may sometimes be too uncomfortable and refrain from replying for fear of getting my neck choked. So, my reply may be minimal.

If the poster uses profanity I put a much different face on him and wouldn't read or reply to what he said. I push the ignore button instead.

So, yes, my perception of a person would influence my replys.

if the subject matter interest me, is contrary to my perspective, i will reply. if i agree, even if of interest, why bother, but i will follow the reponses...

as to the person; it makes little difference. its very hard to determine the intent, quality or cause for the question, in one post. many times when going on, I'll find a young person, maybe not versed in English and over time see some genuine desire to learn. these questions generally do not contain the real intent of the writers. global warming, big bang, black holes and solar system question by the new to a forum are most often asked and most ignored by most...

as to arrogance, opinionated or bullish; most are and this should be in public discussion. i mush prefer a stance on a issue then one who changes course with in the thread...

There is no substitute for reality. Beyond your avatars, I make no genuine effort to visualize any of the people in this forum. The written and/or typed word is good only for determining the thoughts, opinions or ideas of an individual but not the individual himself. Body language, facial expressions, the inflections of ones vocal tone and the overall nuance and mannerisms of ones physical presence account for the majority of what could be called "True Character".

As long as I am in this, or any, forum I go by the post alone.

No, i dont really try to visualise the person either, but even if i do, it doesnt make a difference whether i reply or not. I reply if i got something interesting to same on the topic. If i disagree then i'll say so, cos through a computer there's not much anyone can do to you.

if I know the person, it will influence my post. if I know some are prone to arguing/empty threats/taunts, i will try to present my post with less force. if I dont know the person, I will reply purely to what is in the post and my first impression. either way, i am influenced by what I think the personality of the other person is.
