I just heard a news comment about legalizing betting on US elections, and a positive comment was made that it would increase the number of people going to the polls to vote.

I did a little thinking about that and have to agree with that assessment. Even if you only bet a little bit on the outcome, it then becomes a matter of principle and you will go vote to support your bet.

Let me hear other opinions on this subject.

Well now we know who for sure is rigging our elections. Las Vegas

There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

Las Vegas has allowed for betting on the Presidential as well as other political races for decades now so this isn't very new information.

If you really believe that do you have any supporting documentation or links that might support your opinion?

Question - If you were to make a bet on an election, would you do anything other than vote for the bet you made? I can't believe very many would. So how would this have any affect on the election one way or the other?

People would have an incentive to vote to match their bet rather than for the candidate they expect to do the best job, its a conflict of interest. Clever campaigners could set up deliberately distorted odds betting lines, effectively buying votes. I don't think allowing this sort of betting is a good idea.

If your goal is to make big bucks off the bet, you could be right. But what I think will really happen is the average voter will most likely make a small bet for the party of his/her voting choice. If I'm right then that voter has more incentive to get out to vote rather than skipping the vote. Also, that added commitment might make you lobby your friends to vote your way a bit more.

Without more data on this type of activity I don't really know what would happen, but unless it was a very close race, I don't think it would make much difference one way or the other.

Sure, look at the strip. the house doesn't lose. Odds makers are going to make sure the money is in their favor.

You aren't supporting your position at all. While it true that Vegas got it right in 2008 and 2012 that correlation, not causation. There's no indicator they have any more information than most of the polls that also showed Obama likely to win by a good margin; nor is there any evidence that they could influence the result.

I wonder how many vote to cancel out their relative's vote. My family does that.

I don't have the slightest idea and not sure I even want to know. I personally prefer voting for the party regardless of who they have running for office. The parties platform is more important than who ever wins the office. In the US they like to confuse the issues by smearing the opponents and I find that so unacceptable.
