I was thinking, and I might be paranoid.

This happened for the first time last night. I was coming home from work at night. I saw a black car behind me, follow me all the way to my street. I thought he was following me, I skipped my driveway, I didn't want him to know where I lived. He turned off a street right past my driveway. So I felt stupid.

But a similar thing happened when I was little. Whenever I walked, I felt like a bulge in my pants was showing. So I would always hold my shirt over my crotch, so no one could see it. I also didn't want to put stuff in my pockets because I felt it was very visible. I don't worry about that anymore, which is good.

So I'm just wondering, are these signs of being paranoid?

~ Waterman. ~ We can all think things that make us feel paranoid or delusional.. It does not suggest to me that you are. You jump in your car and while driving see a dark car seemingly following you.. only you know it was not. I can assure you that 'IF' you were a active member of some subversive group or organisation that might be seen as a 'risk' " They" will already know where you live and be reading this.. They are NOT interested in good old Mr ordinary. or me, or you. Cut back on the coffee...

    You live in Saskatchewan, Canada.

    I watch CBC National News.

I can't recall when Saskatchewan even made the news except for weather events.

Seriously, if this is an everyday thing and happens constantly for you then yes you are paranoid if not and it's a rare occasion then no. just a quirk of your personality.

Just because your paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you.

I don't think you're paranoid. At least, not on what you've told us so far. You may just have been a fearful child at various times and this occasionally resurfaces.

But we should qualify that. If, and only if, this sort of thing happens again, you need to think clearly right then and there (or immediately afterwards) about what led up to it. Reading Gavin de Becker's Gift of Fear highlights all the things we don't specifically look at or listen to which were the factors leading to the feeling that something's wrong. You can reflect on such incidents and think about how you were and what was happening around you.

Were you tired or unwell or irritable making you more inclined to react negatively to otherwise innocuous things? Or were there odd things in your surroundings putting you on edge. It might be something as pedestrian as a neighbour's house being a bit different in some way which vaguely discomfits you. Perhaps you thought they were away for the weekend but the lights are on. If you don't think through 'what's different' you can be primed to be nervous about other slightly different things.

So if it happens again, just think through all the details about yourself and your surroundings and make a complete judgement about whether you were right to be a little bit nervous. Maybe you should have been less concerned, maybe you should have taken the whole thing more seriously. Remember, nobody ever lost anything by buying house insurance they never needed to claim on, nor by fastening their seatbelt for an uneventful journey. Being prudent is not the same as being a nervous wreck. Being confident is not about ignoring obvious dangers.

Hey man, there isnt anything wrong with being paranoid

I do this all the time. I have extreme paranoia. Like serious diagnosable paranoia problems.

But again, paranoia doesnt nessicarly have to be a bad thing. Its worked well for me so far. Still alive, thats a plus.

this reminds me of an otherwise fun/friendly lady that went to get coffee in the coffee shop across the street every day at 4pm. one day she said a man was standing on the corner of the street, watching her. then the next day the same man was on the same corner and she was afraid and so wanted to take pictures of him with her cell phone. it turns out this person was finishing work around 4 and was standing at a bus stop. He was probaly saying to his coworkers hey theres this crazy lady watching me every time I take the bus and now shes taking pictures should I call the police or what?

I'm sure quite a lot of us have felt this fear/paranoia regarding such issues! It's probably because we watched too many action movies. Come on! We're just normal people. We don't have the secret recipe to the destruction of mankind. Nope I definitely don't have it. Neither do I have the list of ingredients for Coca-Cola or Pepsi. And definitely not the Krabby Patty! I don't! I don't have the passcode to XYZ Bank's vault as well! I don't, so please don't catch me.

P.S. To anyone who doesn't understand sarcasm and have a sense of humour, please understand that what I mentioned above is a joke. I do not have the secret recipe to Krabby Patties.

I'm always followed by a black suburban GMC which at times even waits for me outside the place I go into. I've grown use to this happening and I now wave at the man behind the wheel. I guess after I started doing that the car hasn't been following me as much but I keep an eye peeled for it. I am never "paranoid" because I know why they follow me around so that's their job.

Maybe. And also maybe a hypochondriac. If you are not a hypochondriac and actually suffer from all the ailments that you post about, then you need to see some doctors.

This happened the other day, I bought an expensive thing, and I was driving home, a car followed me down a few turns.

But this didn't happen again. I think I'm okay.

Oh also, whenever I walk behind someone, or accidentally follow someone when I'm driving, I feel, odd. I feel like the people infront of me think I'm a creep.

I'm not a doctor nor have I played one on tv, but you should consider seeking some counseling. Your symptoms sound a lot like my nephew's and he is getting over your kind of problem. You sound like a good guy. You don't have to live in such discomfort; what you describe is not uncommon, and is treatable.

I have a feeling that the number of Naive people alive does not exceed the number of paranoid people (If you count the 10% highest of the extremes in both).

I know from experience (repeated) that if I remain awake for more than about 42 hours I begin to develop very real paranoid delusions. As adelady(? or someone) pointed out many things can influence our perceptions. I suspect all humans are capable of feeling paranoid under specific conditions. It's nothing to worry about.

I got followed home one night. Car behind me ....well unusual......then didn't see the lights.....got out of my car and a car pulls up in the driveway.....as I am walking out of the garage.....he pull blocking me...and it was dark and I couldn't see his face (we have no streetlights) and say, "I have been watching you and you are beautiful I just wanted to tell you that."

If you believe for one second I wasn't scared to death, you are nuts....but I calmly (thank you theatre training) said, "Thank you for the kind words. You are scaring the shit out of me and you need to leave, right no, please."

Well he did.....and I promptly called security...seems he followed me in the front gate of the resort and told the guard he had some things he was helping to take to my house....then caught the second gate before it closed.

    Now.....am I paranoid. No.

    Still am not.

Was I terrified. You bet I was!

Well I really do not know. I have come up with many good ideas which came to fruition and they all worked out very well. Perhaps that might have been why but again I'm only guessing. I've never been in trouble with the law before nor made any threats so that rules those out. So I'm as baffled as you are about why I am followed around but I'm not paranoid because I've done nothing wrong but only try to help. I carry my own protection with me anyway so I'm secure in knowing if anyone tries anything like happened to you they would not be likely to do that ever again. Fear isn't in my vocabulary but respect for others is.

    Interesting.

Depending what kind of ideas you have come up with in the past, there may be an interest in whom you may be sharing them with. How long have you been aware of being observed?

Anyone who follows me around must be pretty bored. If one is confidant and secure enough about one's behaviors, he wouldn't give a damn who may be watching.
The recent revelations about the NSA are not all that surprising; in scope, maybe, but the US is the most powerful nation on earth and, somehow, the most paranoid.
Fear is a political tool and has been used to justify the suppression of our Bill of Rights. The fourth amendment is no longer respected or observed by Police and the courts.
This is what we should fear.

You are being watched nearly 24/7. everyone, everywhere.

Security camera everywhere. From shopping malls to street corners, gas stations & red light cams. You are being videotaped at all times. Nearly everyone even children these days have a phone with a camera or better recording device in it.

NSA monitoring your phone calls & tsa rummaging through your luggage.

Nothing posted on the internet is private, IP address is logged & recorded for all sites you go to. Usually to tailor spam to you.

Cars are pretty much lo-jacked in some way or another. So are phones, anything with GPS pretty much. Few places on earth one could truly disappear & there would be great sacrifices involved.

If someone truly does want to find you & has the correct resources, It is not difficult. Good news is you have vastly superior numbers on your side. With a population of 7 billion, no one really cares about you or me. Your just not important to the people who have the capability to find you. They will track & record you every move you make, but it will just simply get lost into the database of the billions of other people they are tracking & recording constantly. That is unless you actually do something to flag their interest & with all the deranged evil psychopaths in the world...you would have to do something big to get red flagged

~ 'If', what you said can be interpreted as; " I carry a gun and would have used it " Is alarming. Sell the gun or be prepared to spend many years in a incarcerated state. If you think you are regularly followed. Employ a private investigator to unravel the truth. Seek help. Catch a bus, double back, Wear a costume. Were's wally. Just the random thought ' they are watching me ' Is by itself, nothing.. many of us have had a momentary concern in this regard. Carry and means of protection and stating a willingness to produce and use it.. Little red lights are now flashing.. You could be interpreted as a danger to society. The truth might offend you. You are Not being watched. Nobody even knows who you are., or do they care. But clearly state a willingness to impart your own justice.. now you are becoming a person of interest. A considered risk. be thoughtful of what you say next...

~ see how easy it is to get the wrong idea.. ~ stop watching CSI. Lighten up.

All kinds. A whole battery of doctors to treat both physical and mental problems. Maybe there's a university nearby where you could donate yourself to their medical department.

    Hello Weterman.

I notice that you give your age as 16 on your profile page. As I recall from being a teenager, it is a time of life of heightened senses, where one's sense of awareness is very focused on the self and how we are perceived by others. It is certainly a good thing to be aware of one's surrounds in order to avoid pitfalls and accidents when driving etc. but you may have a bit of an overactive imagination by what you have expressed in this thread.

Most people are so busy going about their own affairs that they hardly notice what others are doing unless it is really unusual.

Why should anyone be 'creeped out' as you put it, unless you actually are habitually stalking them? You're NOT, are you?

Yes I know they probably aren't, but I still feel like they are. Especially if they look behind.

I took up running in my forties and started running on my lunch hour at work. I tended to take the same route everyday, starting at 12:35, and after a while I started noticing that I was passing the exact same people in the same spots almost every day. They'd be coming out of the door of a building or parking their cars, or turning a corner just as I was. There was even a cat that was almost always in the same place. It felt like the movie "Ground Hog day." I was surprised how perfectly timed our routines were.
