I have been studying communication in hopes to be able to minimize the effects of my own high functioning autism as well as to help my son who also has it.

But I think those with autism are not the only people that can benefit from this. It seems the lack of communication skills disrupts a great many threads on this forum so I thought I would post some videos intended to help people with autism and maybe those without autism can also benefit from them.

This video is over 10 minutes long but the beginning is very elementary and geared more towards very young children. I bumped it to the parts that it seems even many adults seem to struggle.

Grice's maxims are a useful summary, as well:
    Maxim of Quality
    Be Truthful
    • Do not say what you believe to be false.
    • Do not say that for which you lack adequate evidence.

    Maxim of Quantity
    Quantity of Information
    • Make your contribution as informative as is required (for the current purposes of the exchange).
    • Do not make your contribution more informative than is required.

    Maxim of Relation
    Relevance
    • Be relevant.

    Maxim of Manner
    Be Clear
    • Avoid obscurity of expression.
    • Avoid ambiguity.
    • Be brief (avoid unnecessary prolixity).
    • Be orderly.

From: Cooperative principle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I particularly like: Do not make your contribution more informative than is required.

Believe it or not I actually enjoy reading legal contracts because they are so precise that unless you are an idiot(or someone who signs an agreement without reading it... oh yeah that's still an idiot) you cannot claim you didn't understand what was expected of you. I like knowing what is expected of me. I hate guessing games.
