Hi! If you hold in all your emotions and repress certain feelings, how come we feel a need to express that repression and do what we repressed ourselves from doing? Is there a name scientifically that is the violent alleviation of repressed feelings?

Our inhibitions are a part of us which when we aren't careful lead us into doing things we might not like when we look back at doing them. Many people let their inhibitions go when they get drunk, stoned or use drugs .

Repression is a Freudian concept that suited Victorian times because people were repressed and restricted by societal norms. There is a certain amount of repression involved in all cultures and societies - its unavoidable really. Where there are rules there will always be someone who feels repressed by them. Repressing your emotions isn't always a bad thing and doesn't always lead to built up tension and an inevitable explosion. I would say its generally true that as most people get older they are much better able to control emotions without too much trouble - its certainly personally true for me - things that would make steam come out of my ears when I was younger don't even register now.

I would guess the opposite of repression is neuroses possibly or psychopathy....I don't know of a term that is specifically the opposite of repression.

repression, suppression and expression are all terms that need clearer definitions. I think repression and suppression vary in that repression is done on a subconscious level and suppression is done on a conscious level. Expression would be the opposite of the previous two. That is my unprofessional opinion and understanding of the terms.

As far as what society puts on people, I would call that oppression. and the opposite would be freedom.

definition of mental illness- having a personality that the majority of people in your culture don't like or having personality traits that you don't like yourself.

There is an expession that I quite like, some say that certain people "Where their heart on their sleeve", what this means is that these people are very expessive with their feelings and emotions and that these emotions are visible for others see at the time they are being felt. I guess this is a type of opposite to repression because the emotions are delt with fully and immediately rather than being stored away as in repression. Most of us tend to fall in the middle of these two extremes.

Lmao, somehow I don't think one can project their singing abilities through an avatar, but I appreciate the vote of confidence.
