    As a social networking site and perhaps the most popular one has to wonder exactly what is it used for, and what purpose as a meme, does it actually serve?

    I have wondered for quite a while what turn of events is occuring for social life with such electronic instruments of communication being at the disposal of every person with a computer or electronic device. What is facebook for? As all I see is just sharing random thoughts and posting pictures of yourself out with friends to perpetuate your social proof.

    It can be useful for networking and meeting new people, yet overall it seems like a cesspool for thoughful diarreha to be spewed, rough analogy there yes, it seems the most sensical thing about it is for that purpose. My questions are therefore;

    Do you use facebook?
    What do you use facebook for?
    Has it benefited your life in any way?

    Thanks for taking the time to read this thread. Perhaps we can debunk the facebook and social network phenomena here. Personally I prefer meeting up with friends in person; facebook and social network sites seem so much more impersonal and serve to waste our time more than make good use for it.

    I don't use facebook so know little of its applications.

    I would suggest that, if memetic theory is correct, then facebook's purpose is like that of genes: to get replicated. There is no other purpose for a meme.

    Maybe facebook would provide an interesting medium in which to conduct social experiments. A similar thing was done at my uni on an online gaming community (some space exploration game) looking at dispersal patterns after a pandemic hit them (a botched patch).

    Maybe worthwhile considering facebook in the broader context of growing on-line communities?

    Facebook is quite good for ppl like me. Because i have moved a lot and made friends In many parts of my country. and thus I can keep contact with them without having to engage in 2 hour long phone call or something.

    And another nice thing about face book is that I'm studying film thus I can make contacts through facebook and promote my movies for free.

    And if you are familiar with [url=http://www.kickstarter.com]Kickstarter[url/]
    it is awesome to promote your project and gain donations.

    I hope this has answered some of you questions.
