How would you seperate self preservation and cowardice? Any thoughts?
Cowardice is placing personal survival above the survival of close kin, or those perceived to be close kin. Such behaviour is not conducive to preservation of the genes of those close kin. If one group ignore such behaviour because of a gentic predisposition to do so, while a second condemns it because of a genetic prediposition to do so, then the second group will be fitter in their environment.
The need to fit into a social grouping as part of a survival strategy for the individual means they must take notice of the censure of the group. Consequently, even thought it is prejudicial to their survival they come to view the absence of 'selfless, brave' behaviour as a negative quality.
A good answer, thanks!
