When we yawn, why does it quite often make other people yawn as well?

I've noticed that it also happens when I'm on the phone to someone, not just face to face.
    Thanks

    Not necessarily.
I did a bit of research after posting this question and found this article:

which suggest that there's more to it than a simple mirror action.

Yeah..I'd realized it too...When my friend yawn at the other cubicle beside mine in the office, I feel like yawning too...I asked her if she feel the same, and yes it is..even we didnt see the face...

I wonder if there's something we can do to avoid the 'disease'..

    From the link I posted:

"Mirror neurons typically become active when a person consciously imitates an action of someone else, a process associated with learning. But they seem to play no role in yawn contagiousness, the researchers in the new study found."

This suggests that it isn't a mirror reflex.

Has anyone yawned while reading this thread?

It is contageous to me and to most people I know, even seeing a lion yawn makes me yawn.

It's present way down the mammal family tree at least. Cats and dogs often yawn if people yawn, and vice versa.

I think some people also yawn when they are stressed.

This guy at work yawns frequently when he has to have a conversation with someone. Either that means he is a freaking freak, by yawning during a conversation (as in always doing that), or it is a stress reaction.

I give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

Maybe it isn't a stress reaction though, because it is utterly annoying. But maybe yawning used to have a positive context.

Agreed, I've noticed that I do tend to yawn more when I'm stressed for some reason.
