this is a 5-part series on the atkinsons diet, showing how prejudiced scientists
dismissed the atkinson diet as quackery, due to poor scientific workmanship on the end of atkinson.

myself, i learned an important lesson, a lot of people can have scientifically unsound methods, that works, but the explanation for why they work could be complete bollocks.
in the case of atkinsons, it seemingly defied the basic principles of the universal law of energy conservation in that it actually worked.
because it basically says "eat this specific food, and you can eat what you want"
but true to science, it unraveled the mystery by exhaustive scientific testing, until all the impossibles had been weeded out. _________________ only a fool puts art above science. |

There is no mystery to the atkins diet, if you don't eat any carbohydrates your body will metabolize fat and protein, which causes degredation of your fat and raises ketone levels in your blood. This is because the blood/brain barrier prevents the brain from directly getting fat out of your bloodstream. So, the fat first has to be broken down by the liver and converted to ketones that can reach the brain to be used as energy. This puts a heavy load on the kidneys since they have to remove the excess ketones, and it puts a heavy load on the liver that's now working overtime to convert fat to ketones. This lack of carbohydrates also causes lethargy and disrupts normal metabolic process.
Does the atkin's diet cause you to lose weight? Yes and no one ever argued against this.
Is the Atkins diet good for you? Probably not.
There are issues of vitamin deficiency, and degredation of muscle tissue, including the heart. Although it seems to reduce HDL, it also reduces LDL cholesterol, which puts you at risk for heart disease. It has also been linked to cancer.
There were also leaks that Atkins had suffered a few heart attacks during his life that he kept secret.
The theory behind the weight loss is there, it just might not be the best course of action to lose weight. |

ketones? no no no, thats false. losing weight with the atkinson diet has nothing to do with ketones, you can see from the documentary.
they did a very thorough study on that, they put 2 people on 2 diets, atkinson, and something else, and it was shown that atkinson had a VERY small difference in ketone level, compared to the other diet.
and it definitely did not explain the weight loss, as the ketone levels were far from large enough.
the documentary answered why atkinsons worked however, which was simply down to the fact you ate less calories than you would normally eat.
and of course atkinson suffered heart disease, he was obese for most of his young life. obesity puts an incredible, LETHAL strain on the heart,
as everything requires more energy to do.
ANY diet where you lose weight fast, puts a strain on your heart, as you have to take in less calories than you burn, or put heavy strain on your whole body through rigorous exercise.
it is a well known fact among athletes that training actually destroys muscles,
and it is the rest and plenty of food that rebuilds those muscles stronger than you were before.
its like saying "don't drink water, people drown in water every year"
one of the most damaging things you can do as an obese person, is sleeping on your left side.
why? your heart is on the left side. lying down on your left side, is choking the heart, making you wake up with heartburn. _________________ only a fool puts art above science. |

The documentary is poorly made, ketosis is exactly how Atkins work.
Ketosis is also an appetite suppresant, and excess ketones are processed out through sweat glands, the breath, and urine. The documentary also says that the person does have ketosis, they didn't compare ketone levels in two diets.
The nonsense about conservation of energy is ridiculous because the documentarian obviously doesn't understand biochemistry. Several joules of energy taken in are lost as heat, fat and protein metabolism is a lot less efficient than glucose metabolism. It requires a higher energy expendature than glucose metabolism and yields less energy. |

Huh? "Choking" your heart gives you heart burn (acid reflux)? _________________ "Gullibility kills" - Carl Sagan |

| I avoid sleeping on my left side myself. When I do, I tend to wake up with a painful heart. (Not heartburn, just a painful heart.) |

Sorry to keep deviating from the topic, but if I'm not mistaken, your heart is in the centre of your chest. The only reason people think of it being on the left side is because the left ventrical is larger than the right one (it's the one that pumps the oxygen rich blood through the body, while, if I remember correctly, the right ventrical pumps blood through the lungs and back into the left atrium) and portrudes more on the left. _________________ "Gullibility kills" - Carl Sagan |

| I suspect the pain you're feeling is just in your ribs, one thing is for sure you shouldn't be waking up with pain in your chest from the way you slept lol. Maybe you should speak to a doctor about it. |

no its pain in the heart, as i don't get the same pain when lying on my right side. i've seen a doctor about it, and he said "this kind of stuff i shouldn't be handling", or something along those lines. _________________ only a fool puts art above science. |
