Is observation the only way to detect motion?

i can detect odor with my nose, and temperture with my finger and the taste of a banana with my tongue and the sound of a 747 with my ear. I can also detect the sound of a 747 with my vcr and the temperture with my thermometer.

All those senses could be considered "observation".

nerve cells in your nose are observing particles from whatever you're smelling, same with the banana
the 747 made sound waves in the air, that got recorded on the magnetic tape of the vhs, that your ears are now observing... you get the point

ok that's fine but off the point. The question should be asking if motion is only detectable through observing it with the eye?

oh haha you had me a little confused there, depends on whats in motion
if the object has enough gravity you could detect it getting closer or farther away from you, same for other forces

also if that object hits something you could detect how fast it was going by the impact it made

thanks for the kind explanation. my thought was if you were traveling 18k mph in an earth orbit with the window shades drawn, i dont think you can detect this motion.
