    Hi all,

I hope this is the right forum for this.

I have a hypothetical question/concept to run by you. This is a little farfetched and sci-fi style. So forget modern technical limitations, just think 'physics feasibility'.

Would it be possible to build a single space station that formed a complete ring around Earth?

Could it sustain an orbit? would it create centrifugal forces? How would it need to be constructed etc?

    thoughts greatly appreciated

Not unless it was attached to the Earth by cables or space elevators, Or you used some type of rocket assist system to keep it stable.

A solid ring by itself is not stable. If it gets nudged just the least little bit, part of the Ring will move closer to the Earth and the opposite side further away. The closer side will tneh feel a stronger gravitational force and be pulled in even closer. Eventually, the Ring will hit the Earth.

It was this reasoning that finally showed that Saturn's rings where not solid but made up of individual objects.

    Your got that from Halo....
Of all the wonders in the universe, none is likely more fascinating and complicated than human nature.

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe."

"Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence"

    Thanks, Janus.

And Cold, if you mean I got the idea from Halo, I didn't. I just thought about it while I was drumming up short story ideas. Although, funnily enough, I've since discovered it is basically th same idea from a book I never read: 3001 Final Odyssey.

    almost spooky... not
