This is SUPPOSEDLY an email from a JPL scientist named "David Pieri"

"This is a professional interpretation based on having labored over literally thousands of Viking Mars Orbiter Images, hundreds of Mars Observer images, many, many, many Landsat, ASTER, and airphotos of the earth, having studied aeolian and fluvial geomorphology at the graduate level at two universities, and well over 20 years of aerial and orbital photointerpretation and optical and radar remote sensing here at JPL/Caltech--and years of field experience in a range of climatic zones from desert to arctic. Also, the subject of my Ph.D. thesis was (the first) systematic global study of martian valley networks, in which I looked at thousands of features, such as the one in the MGS image, over a period of years."
Here's the problem. The hundreds of Mars Observer Images are not supposed to exist. The craft supposedly DIED.

    This guy does exist;

    David Pieri
Science Team Member, EOS IDS Volcanology Team Co-I
Jet Propulsion Laboratory (I have his email)

Now my question is this; What if he is telling the truth and did not just make a mistake? How could he mistake such a thing?? Is there a reason to hide such a mission?

    1)
What's your source for the email?

    2)
Communication with the Observer craft was lost during orbital insertion maneuvers. Were no photographs taken before communication was lost?

There are [url=http://www.msss.com/mars_images/moc/MENUS/MO/mo-cruise.html] at least some images of Mars taken by the Observer craft from at least 28 days before it was lost.

Yes, but in the email (still trying to verify it) he seemed be referring to high quality shots of the surface. There was not supposed to be hundreds either so I am still trying to figure this one out.

How do you know? I haven't found any indication of how many images were returned.

Have you emailed Dr Pieri to ask him about it?

I DIDNT MEAN FOR IT TO BE A STRONG WORD. The website said A FEW IMAGES were returned before orbital insertion. I have emailed him and as of yet I have not gotten a response.

Still no response. I'm a little worried that he probably never checks that email, so I don't expect one either.

They guy is probably just making a mistake because at the end he's talking about the Mars Global Surveyor. So many probes so hard to keep them apart

Undoubtedly, "A mistake" is the only out available that would easily dismiss his remark. However - I'm not ready for that yet.

He seemed to have genuinely looked at these photos by specifying "hundreds". Also, when you work so long on such a mission and IT FAILS, only sending a few images - YOU REMEMBER IT'S NAME AND THE FAILURE.

Given the way he wrote I just find it hard to believe he'd mistake such a thing.

I had found a site with about 4 images and it said - it sent back "a few images". It was a NASA site. I'll be dammed if I remember the site though.

I tend to agree with DEChengstp; he’s got mixed up. It is however, a pretty big “mistake”.

    Keep e-mailing him.

Before He created Heaven and Earth, God created Hell to be used for people such as you who ask this kind of question.

I did email him, but I don't wanna stalk him. Theres no reason for him to answer me. He has not responded, and I don't think he ever will. If he was talking about something top secret, he sure as hell can't tell me. If he was just mistaken then he'd feel stupid confirming it to me! lol

This is true. This may be a mystery that will never be solved then. :P
I like the idea that he was talking about something top secret; much better than a mistake.

It certainly is. Maybe one day we can figure it out. His li'l email is all over the conspiratorial/UFO sites, so I'm sure he's been warned.. lol

If this was a mistake, it would be like someone who worked on the Apollo 13 mission, referring to Jim Lovell walking on the moon, when he never did. When these missions fail, it stays with you. It's not something they forget. So I still find that very doubtfull.

In the end, I'd just like to know what's in the HUNDREDS of images.

Try writing or emailing MSSS and asking them: How many images were returned from MOC-1? How can I access them?

Just did; thanks for the idea. LET'S HOPE I was not sent to their spam folder!
