I was enjoying some Hubble images the other day, I got to thinking: When viewing pictures of galaxies edge on, you can observe a dark band, likely rouge planets and space dirt. These bands are very defined and vivid. Likely these bands have mass, why aren't they distorted by light pollution? If gravity effects light, and the matter in these bans likely have some degree of gravity, wouldn't is bend the back light and cause some level of distortion? The bending of light observed in the solar eclipse observations, could that be more a prism effect caused by the corona energy of the sun? I am sure I may be off and don't want to stir any ire from the crowd, just a little more information for my limited understanding. Thanks in advance.

Is this what you’re talking about?

All that belongs to human understanding, in this deep ignorance and obscurity, is to be skeptical, or at least cautious; and not to admit of any hypothesis, whatsoever; much less, of any which is supported by no appearance of probability...Hume
