    In 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration (1) published the first image of M87's central black hole, estimated at about 6.5 billion solar masses (2). This image was the first to reveal the ionized accretion disk (ring), and the "shadow" of the super massive black hole. The EHT image was produced by a global array of radio telescopes, vastly increasing their resolving power.

    New data in polarized light reveal amazing details in the rotating ring of ionized gases (3). The appearance of magnetic fields in the ring and their impact on the dynamics of the black hole and its acquisition of surrounding gases are detailed in this article.

    Most interesting for some of us is the relativistic jet of ionized gases produced from this ring. It is related to the magnetic fields, which also relates to the jet's structure and velocity. The jet is also remarkable in that it is emitted in a helical pattern, due to precessing, out to 5 light years, and lobes of the jet extend out to 250,000 light years (2). This is approaching twice the diameter of the Milky Way! It is expected that these magnetic fields are rather substantial.

    One wonders if such jets may be the source of the "Oh-My-God" particle (4). This is believed to have been a proton which entered earth's atmosphere moving at more than 99% the speed of light.

    These images reveal the most dynamic details of a black hole ever observed, and provides yet another historical milestone in black hole astronomy.
