What I'm curious about in general is why we need different theories at different scalesto begin with.

At this point, I'm more in favour of variable gravity. Something tells me the simple F(g) = MmG/r^2 (I hope I didn't leave something out of that) isn't actually fully accurate.

It's sort of like how, when you're standing on a very very large circle and trying to measure the distance between yourself and another point on the circle, you can leave the curvature of the circle out of your calculations and still be pretty close, if it's only a short distance away, but not if it's a very far distance away.

For example: If you're measuring how many miles it is between your house and the nearest town, you can leave the Earth's curvature out of the calculation if you want, because it's not a major factor.

I suspect that there may be something we need to include in our formula for gravity when making very large scale or very small scale calculations, but which we're not including, and maybe that is why we think we need dark matter.

I do not understand dark matter, dark energy or anti-matter. Astronomy magazine is coming out with a special issue for May which will hopefully explain all this for me.

As I understand the theory, the problem is that the stars on the outside of galaxies revolve around the galaxy at too high a speed for gravity to account for, unless a bunch of invisible mass is causining there to be more gravity than what it looks like there should be.

It's kind of a patch on the existing theory.
