    i was reading in wikepedia:
All observed GRBs have originated from outside the Milky Way galaxy, although a related class of phenomena, soft gamma repeater flares, are associated with magnetars within the Milky Way. It has been hypothesized that a gamma-ray burst in the Milky Way, pointing directly towards the Earth, could cause a mass extinction event.
would a warning occur if a gamma ray burst were aimed directly at the earth ? i do not think there is anything people could do if a warning ?

also, do you think that GRB aimed directly at earth, one from within our galaxy, would it kill all life ? would it kill slowly or quickly ? i know depends on distance from earth. seems like life that is below ground would survive. i read where most earth biomass was underground and maybe safe from GRBs ?

Due to expected severe depletion of the ozone layer, intense solar ultraviolet radiation would result from a nearby GRB, and some of the patterns of extinction and survivorship at this time may be attributable to elevated levels of UV radiation reaching the Earth. In addition a GRB could trigger the global cooling

for GRBs coming from within our own galaxy i think it would greatly depend on the distance. for GRBs from other galaxies maybe there is no bad effect on earth.

I don't see how there could be any sort of warning as it would have to travel faster than light to get here before the gamma rays.

yea put on a wish cap and open your umbrella should work lol.

and yea, if another galaxy, we're just lucky to observe it.

i was wondering if there was any preliminary sort of radiation, maybe a 'buildup' of lower frequency radiation like light, intense UV, or xrays prior to the gamma rays ?

Good point. But I guess we would have to know a lot more about the causes. And be monitoring any possible candidate sources for signs of relevant activity. And then what would we do? Maybe by then we can move the Earth out of the way!
