Voyager spacecraft, destined for deep space, were fitted with Golden Records. Conceivably an alien species might recover these to experience the most beautiful aspects of humanity. But the compilation and launch of those Records was also a declaration to ourselves about our identity as a species.

Now in plans for starships of the future, that transport colonists to other worlds, we have dull metal and military colours, unadorned and unfriendly. Does this represent humanity?

How would you like to present humanity? As captain, how would you decorate your starship?

My starship would be a battleship. I would coat it unicorn blood, Severed fairy wings and leprechaun feet. I would want the universe to know i mean serious business.

I'd get Danny Boyle to work on it with Neil deGrasse Tyson and Damien Hirst thrown in there for public controversy and fame. They'd have to produce a lot of different designs to be layered on top of each other in inks visible in different wavelengths of light. I don't want to show any "visible light" bias! Depending on who finds it, their evolutionary background will decide the treat their "eyes" get! Yes. That's what I'd do.

I'd have It cloaked all the time so the bad ass aliens do not locate me.

I think you've kind of put your finger on it with the term 'military colours', the military is pretty much all about function and uniformity. If indeed our future spacecraft are of military orgin then you're probably spot on, certainly no reason to expect much else.

However back on civvy street things are a bit more imaginative, just lets take trucks & buses or even cars and we can see a miriad styles and colours with forms taliored for their aesthetic beauty or to make them more desirable to the public.

If our spaceships are private then we could expect to so many different paint schemes all designed to distinguish themselves from each other and reflect to a much greater extent the true diversity of human imagination, creativity and design.

Likely a military space colors would be pure black or some sort of active camouflage where light wraps around it.

However, with the current space ship paint scemes. I could see our first starcraft having a gigantic mcdonalds logo on the hood.

Lol, hey your right they are bound to and also Coca Cola & Nike for sure. This of course being said I would imagine and certainly hope we would also see some more higher quality designs as well such as perhaps the Bugatti spaceship design from the film Elysium, or indeed this one pictured below baring the Ferrari colours and logo:

I'd paint it with an energy absorbing material, basically "black" across the entire electromagnetic spectrum.
"starship" = not a landing craft.

I don't want to paint my starship, I want someone else to do it.

Dunno, with the current state. I think earthlings would be rejected from every space faring civilization.

We react with hostility, warfare & genocide when we encounter a diffrent civilization within our own species. I would hate to see how we would react to aliens.

Perhaps in spite of whatever tidy image authorities decide on, next morning some graffiti artist will have tagged it with psychedelic throwup, as on boxcars.

Then a hundred-year voyage could be awfully boring. I wonder what the youth will do for kicks? Can the starship possibly not have streamers of toilet paper stuck to it?

painting your ship would just mean more mass to accelerate. and if we are talking starships then that is a lot of paint. also i would think on such a long voyage most would be ablated by micrometeorites. plus i don't do "pretty", i go for functionality.

How can you make such a prediction about the moral standards of hypothetical beings?

    G.R.:
Be careful with your self loathing, you're projecting it out onto an entire species.
    or
You shouldn't watch the peculiar view that you get from the "news" as often.
