Hey everyone, I was looking through some old threads on Light and the speed of light and all i really come across where threads trying to disprove the speed of light. There are others, unrelated to my questions but related to light, and were quite interesting.

I know light is the speed of light unless traveling through a medium, in which case slower, that is common knowledge. My question come about when i was looking into this warp drive nasa is currently investigating. When light is traveling through the space next to a giant mass, that light will travel faster than light to the observers because of the contracted space around the mass. Is that true? If so does the frequency of that light blue shift at all? Or does it only blue shift through that contracted space and return to its original frequency when it returns to a normal plane of space?

That nearly straight up answers my question. So the gravitational well does not change the observed speed of light's speed (faster) just alter's the frequency while in that space?

Ok that is odd... I typed out a response earlier- and now it is gone.

I actually spoke with a NASA scientist about FTL drive. I will never forget his comment, " If you are in a race with light you will lose. The only way to win that race is to cheat. But cheating may be possible. We are working on that. ... Most of the ways that show mathmatical promise are impossible due to engineering problems, ie build a space craft with more mass than several earths." (I'm boiling down a weekend's worth of conversation into a paragraph, but that is the gist of it.)
