Hey, signed up basically to ask this question and to quell what are hopefully unfounded and false fears. I've came across sites claiming there is a black hole inside earth waiting to devour it on possibly dec. 21st.

link deleted (there is no black hole currently at the earth's core)

link deleted (no, the LHC did not create a black hole at the earth's core.)

I have read a thread debunking the second link, but it doesn't seem like he's alone in his claims. Also, i have come across articles talking about gaps in the earths magnetic field that he says would be caused by this black hole growing.

Can someone explain to me why these are both false and we are safe for Friday?

    Thanks.

I've deleted over-excited links. Could the astronomers please give some pointers on ....

    1. Why reversing polarity will not cause the sky or the earth to collapse in tiny pieces.

    2. Why the LHC did not and cannot create a black hole anywhere.

    3. Why a black hole at earth's core, from any cause at all, does not make sense.

    1) All indications are that polarity reversals, while seemingly happening in a short geological time when they do, doesn't mean that it ever switches off during the transition. Besides, while it happens over a short geological time scale, by our usually experienced measures it takes a long time to happen, i.e. it can't suddenly happen in one day. They do happen with a certain patterned regularity though, by which we should not expect one in the near future. There is no way to predict when it will happen, certainly no way to link a certain date to it!

    2) It was thought that there was a possibility that the LHC could create a micro black hole, but this was never a cause for concern, even if it was a certainty. All black holes evaporate through a process called Hawking Radiation. The smaller the black hole, the quicker it evaporates due to the relative mass of the lost radiation to the mass of the black hole and because of the increased mass to surface area of the event horizon the smaller it gets. So, micro black holes would evaporate in very short order before it could do anything. Also, while the LHC is the highest energy particle accelerator ever built, it still can't compare to the high energy collisions that are happening in our upper atmosphere all the time due to cosmic rays. If high energy collisions were a danger, we would never even have existed in the first place.

    3) A black hole has mass and if it was created (and it miraculously survived), it would have started to fall towards the centre of gravity of the earth. It would accelerate past the centre, slow down, and come back, endlessly. It would consume matter the whole time, growing, and would eventually start causing problems. Thing is, as in point 2, there is really no way they could live long enough to come close to doing something like that and again, it would have happened a long time ago already if it were possible. IF it were possible though, there would be no way at all to predict an exact date where it's effects would suddenly start to become noticeable and indeed spell the end of the world. No way at all.

What we have here are people feeding off of the 2012 hype nonsense and coming up with all sorts of nonsense either out of ignorance, or deliberate malice. These people making these claims could have no possible way of knowing what they claim to know scientifically. There is nothing to worry about at all. ALL of the 2012 claims are bunk and certainly so.

    1. The Earth's magnetic field has swapped poles before, nothing terrible happened. This can be seen in the magnetic polarisation of rocks that have been taken over their Curie point during their history, here's an example of recent history: BBC News - Maori stones hold magnetic clues and magma flow from old volcanoes also shows magnetic field alignments that were different to those today. Migrating birds that use magnetic fields to navigate might get a bit confused, and we might get exposed to a little more solar radiation in some areas than we are used to (as the charged particles follow fields lines, and that's why we have Auroras at the Poles) but it's not going to kill us.

    2. The LHC smashes matter into matter, creating high energy particles, but these are short lived. A black hole requires a lot of matter, an entire star which has a mass over the Chandrasekar limit, which collapases upon itself when the internal pressure from the fusion reactions slows, and is less than the force of it's own gravity. This takes a very long time. The idea that a small short lived particle can have sufficient mass(energy) to start a micro black hole, and attract matter to it in a chain reaction, when it is so short lived doesn't sound feasilble. Take the Higgs Boson, it lasts for about 10^-33 seconds, and is only massive because it's energetic, for a black hole you need containment I think. Over to the practicing scientists for this one, I'm rusty.

    3. If there were a black hole inside the Earth, we'd have been eaten up by it now, it would have accreted matter, and grown, and accreted more matter, until it exhausted the Earth. We could safely orbit a black hole from a distance, but if you come into contact with one, (ie, touch the event horizon) it's game over.

Just to put everyone's mind to rest I have decided to spend most of Friday flying over the Earth's surface just to make sure nothing untoward happens. I'll use my super power to take care of anything unsettling that does arise.

It cannot end on Friday since the world has already ended.

It is not really a stupid question. There is much uninformed rubbish circulating about The End of the World, some of it quite convincing if you have received little or no training in thinking skeptically. In these circumstances it would be stupid not to ask the question in order to get clarification. So well done, both for asking the question and for accepting the answers.

Ok, so furthermore, is it possible that our solar system is coming close to any black hole that could pose a threat to us or the sun in our galaxy?

Think we would notice the perturbation in the Suns wobble that wasn't accounted by the major planets.

And, is it possible there is an asteroid out there that we haven't found yet that could hit us friday? Maybe i'm just paranoid, but I saw NASA found an asteroid that flew between us and the moon only two days before it occurred.

    Thanks again.

We have a fair measure of the larger asteroidal bodies that could cause continental devastation. We certainly don't yet have a comprehensive knowledge of the smaller rocks, say the size of the one that caused the Tunguska event a century ago. One of these striking the heart of Paris would lay waste to the city. Hitting the ocean it would generate substantial tsunamis, with consequent loss of life. We are still refining our knowledge of the probablity of these events happening.

You are far more likley to be killed crossing the road. If you are lucky you will be struck by a meteor while crossing the road and become world famous.

The daily currant is satire. You might have just quoted The Onion for that uplifting post, as well.

From the link: "The asteroid, known as 2012 XM21, went undetected until now because of high levels of chroniton radiation in its core, which shielded it from the sensor technology of NASA's Near Earth Object Program." That is Star Trek jargon.

A black hole is a star so massive that it collapsed under its own gravity.Astronomers enjoy repeating that not even light can escape from a black hole.Escape velocity on earth is 24,850 miles per hour. Nothing travels faster thanlight at 186,000 miles per second, and the escape velocity from a black holeexceeds even the speed of light. What goes in, stays in! Sort of like whathappens in Vegas, stays in Vegas! A massive star's collapse is so drastic thatonly its gravitational field remains. With gravity this powerful, time slowsdown and ultimately stops. At the center of a black hole is a singularity. Asingularity is a size-less point of infinite density. The collapsed star's massdisappears into the singularity as the black hole becomes a bottomless funnel.

Cygnus X-1 is a black hole. It is a source of X-rays in theconstellation Cygnus. Astronomers found it when studying binary stars with anX-ray telescope launched in 1970. Black holes are believed to be at the centersof galaxies and may have been responsible for the formation of galaxies.

Stephen Hawking thinks there may be "wormholes" at the center of black holes leading to other universes.
