Is it finding sure signs of life in the cosmos or evidence of other universes? What's the big prize?

All that belongs to human understanding, in this deep ignorance and obscurity, is to be skeptical, or at least cautious; and not to admit of any hypothesis, whatsoever; much less, of any which is supported by no appearance of probability...Hume

I doubt if there is one big prize. Finding life outside of earth is interesting, but I think questions about the origin of the universe and its ultimate outcome are more fundamental.

I agree with your post, but I would like to add something about the "one big prize".
I'm naive enough to believe that increasing knowledge, about the origins of the universe, might provide pointers as to whether the "why" question has any kind of answer. I am aware this cannot be called a proper scientific question, but I still tend to think the "how" and "why" questions may be linked and answers here could well be the top prize.

If we were in ancient Rome, we would see the stars as a zodiac, a system of forewarning. Not good. A horrorscope. Like there's problems associated with going out there, right? Are we over that yet, and how?
