So I was sitting here pondering the universe and our solar system, as usual. I thought to myself, "If there is ice crystals on, in, or around further out planets, then this means there is INDEFINITELY water there." If the Sun is a star, then that means it is a ball of gas, correct? If so, then it's almost safe to assume it is burning outward... That being said, after a LONG period of time, the Sun will have scorched past Earth, reaching other planets, and causing these ice crystals to melt. Which depending on which planet, will either fill crevices, or cause the liquid metals(which will have heated by the time the Sun's heat arrives) to cool and form solid ground. Given the variables in all the different planets gastrous and elemental resources, I believe it's safe to say that "If the Sun is expanding, then it will eventually evolve other planets in our solar system, to where they can support life.". I am looking forward to any input. And please understand, I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL SCIENTIST. Just an average man, with a high I.Q. who didnt want to learn the way they tought. A rebellious youth, with a brilliant mind if you will :-)

The Sun is not currently expanding, if anything it is shrinking as it "burns up" its fuel. But a long time ahead in the far distant future it will indeed swell up into something called a Red Giant, and that does present the possibility that it may thaw out the ice in some of the more remote places in our Solar System.

It would be interesting to know what would happen to, say, Europa.

While the Sun isn't presently growing, it is slowly getting hotter at a rate of ~10% per billion years. Then it will expand into a Red Giant. Of course by that time, it will have lost about 30% of its mass and the planets will have moved further out as a result.

As it expands, its luminosity will increase, and I'm pretty sure that even at the distance of Jupiter, things will be a little warm for life.

That's a big "if". Yes, there are icy objects inside the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt like comets. But the gas planets consist mainly of ... well ... gas.

No. The fusion process is currently taking place in the core of the sun. And it will be doing so for the next several billion years. Only after its depletion, the sun enters the red giant phase in which the hydrogen fusion process slowly moves outward. The sun bloats in the process. After several phases of this hydrogen shell burning, the Sun will have extended to a size that is even bigger than the orbit of the Earth. At the same time, the surface temperature of the Sun will be reduced to only a few thousand degrees.

No, the growth cannot be maintained infinitely. At some point, the fusion process stops entirely and the Sun collapses. The implosion shock will expel the outer layers of the Sun and form a so called "Planetary Nebula". The core remains as a "White Dwarf" and slowly cools down. This final stage is a relatively quick process leaving not enough time to generate conditions that support the formation of life. Some ice may melt, but that's probably all that will happen. A short while later, everything will either be destroyed by the implosion shock or frozen again.

Referee has stopped the contest-a technical (Tko) knockout in the first round!
