Thread: Sun Spots and the Biblical warning...

Hello all,
I was wondering about this the other day when I heard a report about the sun spots being so big that people could see them at sun-rise/set, and threw a haze at times, And I began to wonder, What was the size of the Biggest Sun-Spot ever recorded, Then I began to think, In the Bible it saying the beging of the end of day will have the Sun going Black in part of the grand scheme. Now Could there be enough & Big Enough Sunspot on the sun to make it appeare Dark or Black in a way? Oh Here's a Link to an AWSOME CME , Look for those auroras this month theres been alot..

If you left out the bible reference you probably would have gotten a better response. The bible writers clearly didn't know a thing about science and they didn't even represent the best knowledge of their own day--as such most of what they think they knew about how the world works (including even human behavior) is garbage.

To answer your questions though, records of sun spots go back more than 2500 years in China, so yes they are noticeable to the naked eye. In no way would they darken the entire surface though.

As for CMEs a repeat of the September 1859 event would do a lot of damage to our modern electrical infrastructure.

Another point that needs to be made is that sun spots are only "dark" in contrast to the rest of the Sun's surface. They actually are as bright as an electric arc.
So even if the Sun were to be completely covered with sun spots, it would look bright to the human eye.
