If I remember right, they are pictures of gamma-ray and x-ray bubbles found above and below our galaxy. You can't actually see them with the naked eye. They added the purple coloring to show you where the bubbles are.

Hi, the colour image is a composite of different wavelengths. The image of the Milky Way is just added to illustrate the relative location of these bubbles. The blue/purple part awfully looks like an idealisation of the real situation. The triple of black-white images is probably the real background from which the coloured bubble is derived. But these are not ultrasound images as you write. If I see it correctly, they are images taken at a photon frequency of 408 MHz (= 70 cm wavelength). They highlight a region of highly ionised gas that also emits at x and gamma ray energies. The reason for these bubbles are supernovae in our galaxy. The intense energies that are liberated by these events heat up and drive gas from inside the galactic plane into high latitudes. Another famous example is the galaxy M 82.
