I am not sure it is true that artists have generally not been recognised in their time. For much of history, art was produced by known artists, chosen and commissioned by wealthy patrons or the church. It sounds as if you are repeating the c.19th Romantic myth of the struggling, impoverished artist, in a garret somewhere. I suspect that is mostly nonsense.
