Jan Fabre (a Flemish artist) filmed a scene for his new art movie in the City Hall of Antwerp, in which we see people throwing cats in the air:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWWdFgDsJtM

Although the artist stated that no cats were harmed whilst making this movie,
one of the cats (Cesar) was injured during the filming and he is now permanently lame.

    Is this art or abuse?

PS: After the stunt with the cats, he had tarantulas walking through a field with razor blades at an exhibition in Eupen (Belgium).

I call it natural selection, only the strongest cats are able to lay around all day.

Abuse! I hate this sort of thing, I've got no sense of humour for this stuff whatsoever. Maybe I'll do an art installation with artists crawling through a field of razor blades.....idiots :-(

It has occurred to me that it is a serious flaw in the nature of our species that we would even visit our intentions of this sort on other species, be it in the name of art or scientific curiosity. Most other creatures will avoid humans, given the opportunity.

This is probably an intelligent survival strategy on their part.

tossing the cat ain't the problem
catching the cat with it's claws out
makes one not wish to repeat the experience
    and
the cat didn't seem to enjoy it nearly as much as i had hoped.
    ............
contrast that with me and my sons
    as small toddlers
we all loved being tossed(and caught!!!!!!!!)

I can assure you that many people are firmly against the actions of the artist. After the cat video leaked,
Mr. Fabre received 20.000 emails which condemned his act, was a victim of multiple physical assaults and had to hide in order to establish his own safety.

He did not get away with it.

I'd like to throw them, the people, out of a second story window to see if they land on their feet or heads.

Some video of the cat tossing. The moggies didn't seem too happy about it.

I share the revulsion expressed here about this practice. However, a more potent attack can be made against Jan Fabre the artists by pointing out to him that as art this really sucks and pretty well demonstrates he should take up a career as mental patient.

    Should have hired stuntcats.

Things done such as this cat affair, the purpose of which is to generate attention and revenue are deplorable especially since the living beings used are essentially defenseless against the perpetrator.

I would suggest this "art" guy procure some real "game", off-duty bouncers, or perhaps police officers, and try to manhandle them with aim toward his own benefit. Might provide a spectacle worth watching! jocular

An eminently sensible voice on why we shouldn't be using dolphins to "cure" illnesses:
