On most computers today the best background sizes are.
1. 1920 X 1080
2. 1920 X 1200
My own preference leans towards darker backgrounds so my screen icons are not to hard to find because of an over busy bright colored BG. I normally keep most of my screen icons on the left side, so I keep that in mind when looking for great BG's. However post whatever you personally like. An example of what I like is below.

These types work pretty good.
Most of these images look hot and sweaty.
You said to Poste cool backgrounds. Perhaps like a stream running into a waterfall amongst water lilies etc.
You know you have compromised the available Poste Spacing for2013? westwind.

I've used this one several times.
On those days when you are under the weather this one fits the bill.
This is my current background. It's a picture of Tsingy de Bermaraha National Park, which is in Madagascar.
Moose antler, Alsek River, Yukon.
This is a photo I took a couple of hours ago. I believe it is the latest in the year that I have seen Crocus blooming. These were in one of my horse pens, facing north. I may set it as my desktop image, replacing a rather interesting chess set that has held that spot for some time.

I tend to favor dark backgrounds that lack any business on the left side where my icons are and your background fits that description very well.
I feel the exact same way.
Sometimes I just like to look at one of my private beaches.
This looks like a great place to banish your enemies to.

My backgrounds change daily and if I don't like what comes up automatically I change it to something more to my liking. I've collected many thousands of background quality pictures and rarely use the same background twice. I go through between 40-45 backgrounds every month.
There are many programs that can help you deal with many thousands of pictures and I've probably tried most of them at one time or another. The program I consider the best is ThumbsPlus Pro Ver 9.0. At times in the past I've had over 100,000 pictures of many format types and Thumbs handles them with ease. I even had a directory with over 30,000 pictures in it and when I select it in Thumbs it will list all 30,000+ thumbnails in less than 10 seconds. One nice feature the program has it can compare and list all the similar pictures so you can easily find and delete any duplicates.
Volcanos and lava flow make for some excellent conceptualizing...
Gasadalur Village in the Faroe Islands. A nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.
Well, it probably has more entertainment options than Depil, Faroe Islands, population of 2.
This is a rather nice little holiday spot in Italy called Cinque Terre.

Speaking of visiting options for the Faroe Islands, I came across the following:
