I am trying to learn Navajo to keep the culture and spirit of these Native peoples alive in America and in my heart and soul. I was inspired to learn the language after hearing a song on a Pure Moods CD called Yeha Noha, sung by a Navajo elder. I searched in vain for days for a literal translation of the lyrics and came up empty handed. I recently scoured the web to discover some useful words and phrases, which I will share with you below. There are a few books available on the language on Amazon.com if you are interested. Navajo is an Athabaskan language, spoken in the southwestern United States. There are under 200,000 native speakers left.

Linguists call Navajo a "verb-centered" language, although I have not studied Navajo itself. Relatively speaking, English is called "noun-centered", which can rely on pretty much useless "helper" verbs to connect the nouns into the sentence.

For example, in response to the question, "What does he do for a living?" ...
A noun-centered speaker might reply, "Bob is a bus driver."
Do you see the useless helper verb?
A verb-centered speaker might reply, "Bob drives a bus."

Noun-centered languages tend to describe -- and define -- the world in terms of labels, status, possessions, things, static entities, etc. And also the pre-conceived notions that go along with those labels and nouns.

Verb-centered languages tend to describe -- and define -- the world in terms of action, movement, processes, dynamic energies, etc.

Halfway down this page is a okay comparison of these two kinds of languages.

Navajo apparently has a very complex verb system. Good luck.
Grief is the price we pay for love. (CM Parkes) Our postillion has been struck by lightning. (Unknown) War is always the choice of the chosen who will not have to fight. (Bono) The years tell much what the days never knew. (RW Emerson) Reality is not always probable, or likely. (JL Borges)

Hi! Congratulations on starting to learn Navajo. I noticed few errors in starting to look at your list. Navajo is a tonal language for it to be understood you need to learn and write the proper tone marks. For example: Shima is not a word and it doesn't mean mother. My mother is: shim. High tone on the "a". Words for relatives and many body parts cannot exist as non possessed nouns. They are inalienable. Thus, nim= your mother, nihim= our mother, bim= his/her/it's mother, am = someone's mother, etc.
Also, Dine' Bizaad means "navajo language not learning navajo. Hozho is high tone and nasalized on the final o and is a much more complex philosophical concept. In the word for horse the two "ii" are nasalized and high tone and the l is written with a line through it to mean a sound that is like the Welsh double ll pronounced like a non voiced aspirated "L". Horse= łį́į́ʼ.
You might want to get the book and tape :
Dine Bizaad: Speak, Read, Write Navajo by Gossen. Concentrate on the verbs forms as it is most important in this language. Like Japanese of Turkish the language mostly is about verbs. Good Luck and have fun!!

I just came across this post in a random search for something else and thought I would give Gottspieler some encouragement.
I lived a couple years on the Navajo Rez in Kayneta near Monument Valley in Arizona south of Mexican Hat (on the Utah border) . I took classes form a former code talker through Coconino Community College and before that took classes in Navajo culture from Gary Witherspoon ay UW.
The whole list of code talker code is not very useful because it in not in standard Navajo orthography so unless you already speak it you would not be able to pronounce it in an understandable way.
Navajo is a really interesting language with a great deal of distinctive philosophy embedded in the grammar. It also "navajo-izes" almost everything and borrows almost no words from Spanish or english. Beso for money from peso in Spanish is one of the few that are borrowed. Even car or cat are made from onomatopoeic, words not borrowing, chidi and mosi respectively. It also forces you to be much more precise than one normaliy is in English as to what manner you did something. For example if you say "I am going to Flagstaff" you need to decide in what manner you are going, i.e. "like I usually do", "on the way somewhere else", "round trip" etc, etc. Each one has a different conjugation of the verb.
Hzhǫ́ is probably one of the most interesting concept that the Dine' have. It means something like:beauty and harmony, peace, balance, happiness and contentment, wholeness, and goodness all in one word. One of the most important traditional phrases is: Sa'ah naaghai bik'eh hzhǫ́.

    Hzhǫ́ Nhsdlį́į́ʼ, Hzhǫ́ Nhsdlį́į́ʼ, Hzhǫ́ Nhsdlį́į́ʼ, Hzhǫ́ Nhsdlį́į́ʼ
