Watched a Komodo Dragon video and was impressed by its tongue. Reminded me of snakes but then I wondered if dinosaurs also possessed such an organ, at least I think itís a sensory tool. The consensus amongst scientists seems to be that depictions of dinosaurs with forked tongues, especially the big guys, are wrong.

Of course thereís always todays descendants of dinosaurs, aka modern birds and why donít they have them. Found this interesting article. I had no idea that bird tongues have a bone in them.

All that belongs to human understanding, in this deep ignorance and obscurity, is to be skeptical, or at least cautious; and not to admit of any hypothesis, whatsoever; much less, of any which is supported by no appearance of probability...Hume

Pretty hard to imagine the tongues of ancient creatures from such limited remains.

But there is one living creature that uses its tongue in a very remarkable fashion. Killer whales are well known to remove the liver of great white sharks using largely their tongues with near surgical precision. The link below show footage of such an attack. Many white shark remains have been found washed ashore with only their livers removed. Some of the livers are fed to younger orcas in the pod, as liver contains a great deal of nutrients.
