Thread: Why did we evolve to see things like this illusion?

I was recording an attempt at art, and I realize that I ran into one of those illusion images. It makes me wonder how evolution got this wrong, or is there an advantage to this.

Neither. It's merely an artifact of how our eyes and brain work. (We reference things nearby to determine straightness.)

we have thousands of "cognitive deficits". hard wired in the brain The brain is more interested in what works than what is true, if something functions for most purposes and helps with survival and procreation, this is good enough.
We are constantly deluding ourselves and/or making decisions based on probabilities rather than facts.
