Chimps Outplay Humans in Brain Games - Scientific American

I thought this was an interesting article. Chimps outplayed humans in a strategy game supposedly because of better working memory of past moves, which is interesting in itself. I would not have guessed that to be the case.

But comments about trade offs between competitive strategy vs. collaborative or specialized thinking were also interesting.

Victorian scientists, despite the implications of Darwin, saw humans as being at the top of "creation". One could argue that the attitude only really began to change in the last half century. This research highlights why that change was necessary. Overall we are smarter than chimps, but not in every department, and I sure wouldn't want to arm wrestle one.

Very well said, but it may be a little misleading.

Intelligence varies among different levels and different species. Comparing humans to chimps is hard because... we have different motives for life. In the sense of thinking mathematically and being able to perform language is what makes us not smarter than apes, but unique from them.

If we were to compare intelligence with strength and photographic memory, it would seem that chimps are smarter than us! This is also not so. Chimps' abilities to do such things doesn't make them smarter than us, but just unique from us.

    Hope this helps!
