Animals built reefs 550 million years ago, fossil study finds -- ScienceDaily

The earliest known reef made up of the remains of living things is 550 million years old, and now found in a dry part of Namibia. This is from the Ediacaran era, which (if I remember correctly) pre-dates corals.

It may possibly predate the cnidarian class which contains corals, however cnidarians are known from the edicarian.
