    Hello, I'm new to the forum. I'm no scholar so my question may be elementary to some.

    I'm trying to understand the "basic" C 14 dating formula:

    t = [ ln (Nf/No) / (-0.693) ] x t1/2

    EXAMPLE

    t = [ ln (0.10) / (-0.693) ] x 5,700 years
    t = [ (-2.303) / (-0.693) ] x 5,700 years
    t = [ 3.323 ] x 5,700 years

    Can anyone help me understand how we get (-2.303) in the example formula above?
    I've taken the above formula from the website below:

    That is ln(0.1) i.e. the "natural logarithm". It should be on any good calculator. Or you can type it into Google.

    In fact if you put (ln (0.10) / (-0.693) ) * 5,700 into Google or Wolfram Alpha you get the answer: 18939.
