As there are only a few active moderators now, the time has come to add new moderators. We are intending to add two more. The "unofficial" nomination thread will be closed shortly to avoid confusion.

We need to do this from time to time, because people lose interest and move on to other things, and because we tend to have a lot of older members (like me) with a limited shelf life.

    Rules will be as follows:
For purposes of this process, "nominate" and "vote" means the same thing.
    1. All members including moderators can nominate one or more members. There is no limit on the number of people you can nominate, but of course you may only vote for each member once.
    2. Nominations will be closed in 2 weeks (end of the day on October 9).
    3. The top 2 vote getters who do not decline the nomination will be promoted to moderator.
    4. If you nominated somebody in the other unofficial thread, please re-submit here so that I won't have to sort out the serious nominations from the frivolous.
    ETA:
    5. You cannot vote for yourself.

Strange would be an excellent choice, but his last activity was July 5. Not a promising sign.

A moderator is more than science, it is fairness surely. I have not tried it but I'd like to see how it would go.

I think I just cracked a rib from laughing.

When the owners want a mass exodus, they'll make you a moderator. Or when hell freezes over. Either or really.

we'll come to that after the voting is over - or if any of the nominees states categorically in this thread that they don't want to be considered

While I'm gratified to have appeared as a candidate on some people's lists, I have to say I do not think I will have the diligence or patience required, so I do not want to be considered further. Not this time round at least - I might feel differently in a year or so, if I'm still around as a contributor.

While I'm honoured to be nominated I must point out that I once stated elsewhere (and long ago) that I don't think I'm temperamentally suited to being a mod.
I'm not exactly refusing the nomination 1, but I can't believe that the forum is so hard up for potential candidates that it needs me.
"Clean house" is something I'd do (or attempt to do until clashes occurred), but (and I can't believe this hasn't been noticed ) impartiality isn't my strong point when it comes to woo and nonsense 2.

1 I.e. the opposite of Sherman: if nominated I will stand, if elected I will serve 3
2 On the other hand, maybe it could be an opportunity for me to [try] learn[ing] impartiality: y'all want to be my guinea pigs?
3 "Serve", of course, being sorta subjective...

Paleoichneum would be an interesting choice but will he accept?
He could turn it into a real science forum.
Maybe it was unfair of me to nominate Dywyddyr and then advocate someone else. Dywyddyr you are still my first choice for I think you will accept debate, and that makes this place interesting.

Are there any female members to consider? (I don't travel too far around the forums from my home base).

This is one reason why you wouldn't last long: you appear (constantly) to either not read or not understand what you have read.

Let us not bicker about why one should not elect a certain member to become a moderator,
but let us rather focus on proposing members that, when they become moderators, are most likely an improvement for this forum.
"The only safe rule is to dispute only with those of your acquaintance of whom you know that they possess sufficient intelligence and self-respect not to advance absurdities; to appeal to reason and not to authority, and to listen to reason and yield to it; and, finally, to be willing to accept reason even from an opponent, and to be just enough to bear being proved to be in the wrong."

Evidently historical references go over your head (despite me giving a clue).
And, equally evidently, you have trouble following a logical progression.

    With no especial preference:

    RedPanda
    Scherezade

    Paleoichneum
    Flick Montana

    and

Dywyddyr, because Robittybob1 is right you wouldn't close a thread just because "ooh, people are arguing".

I notice I have been nominated, thanks to the people who did so but in this year when I'm doing my teacher training I don't think I will have the time to do the job properly. Also I'm probably not suited to mod on a forum where woo is tolerated up to a point, my stance would be zero tolerance to nutcases (we all know who they are) and it would probably not be a popular approach...

You would be a good mod. I agree with the zero-tolerance approach.

Don't let that stop you. If you would receive enough votes, that would be a sufficient indication that your approach is popular.

Fair enough, though I'm still aware I may not have much time to devote to the forum this academic year...Edit:this was a response to Harold.

And like I said I was willing to go for the Randi Challenge to either prove or disprove it. But no more about that here we are making nominations.

This must be important for there seems to be enough moderators who don't make an appearance in the forum

I don't think you should really list MeteorWayne seeing as how he is deceased and his current place as a moderator is more of a legacy to him and his amazing contributions.

I'd like to know why there are there so many non moderators. Were they once very active?

Well maybe we need a memoriam for the likes of those. Sorry I didn't know the history there.

    I nominate Robittybob 1...

but just to have some fun with the comments youŽll make, hehehe.

Out of curiosity... Moderators moderate all subfrums? or you have a particular moderator for biology, another one for physics and so on?

Thank you marnixR and Pong for the nomination - but I would consider it a bad omen for me to become a moderator.
The last 3 forums I moderated closed down within a few months of my appointment. :S

As to my own personal suggestions:
    StarStruck
    Mayflow
    GTCethos
    F*** THE SYSTEM !!

On a more serious note - here's some suggestions I don't think anyone has made yet:
    DianeG
    GiantEvil
    Billvon
    SayBigWords.com/say/3FC

RedPanda, i'm trying to keep track of the nominations

do i read it correctly that
    (1) you don't want to be considered for the job of moderator, or would you accept if chosen ?
    (2) your first nominations (e.g.Mayflow) were made in jest ?

How the f*ck did I get 6 nominations?
Is the forum entirely brain damaged?

Er, just to skew things away from me...
I'd go with whoever gets the job (assuming none of the nutcases do 1).
But Strange and tk421 definitely should be contenders for the more sciencey parts of the forum.

This isn't (nutcases excepted) intended as a slur on anyone else 2: it's just that people aren't my thing and I couldn't really say who'd be good at modding until I've seen them in action.

1 E.g. (as one example) the guy who nominated himself in this thread.
2 Ooh, did I just manage to make a back-handed insult there?

It could be seven nominations if member pineapples meant to nominate you via providing a short YouTube video in post #63.

It is the behavior that I would be moderating to begin with. Someone comes up with a "new" theory, well it is the responses that will determine whether the moderator has to step in.

Thanks so that is two votes.
I don't think it will be easy, but how much moderating do most of the current mods do? I wouldn't be as strong as John Galt but who can match that?

But you can't "do the job". Because you don't know how to do the job, you do not know right from wrong when it comes to science evidenced by your posts.
Imagine an alternate universe where Robbity was a moderator on a science forum. You remember Bizarro Superman?
    Precisely. A joke.

You might think it is a joke, but it is not. I don't know "Bizarro Superman" so I can't relate to the proposed concept.

Thanks so that is two votes.
That's two nominations. If we were doing this properly, any nominations more than "seconded" still amount to "nominated".

If the choices aren't obvious by informal consensus, I suggest another thread just for voting.

Well, let's just go all out and have a campaigning thread too. A thread where moderator wannabes can tell us why they would be "perfect for the job".

Then we can start a "fact checker" thread to check the facts stated by campaigning mod-wannabes.

And another thread where ex-moderators can share their experiences and wisdom.

You're either missing or ignoring the actual point.
    This is a science forum.
We've seen what you try to pass off as science.
We've seen your (tenuous) grasp on rationality and logic.

There are many persons who I think could do an excellent job as moderators. I may add a name or two later, but two that occur to me at present are

    MagiMaster

    Scheherezade

    It's not prejudice.

I predict brain drain if you managed to become a moderator.

My vote goes to Robbitybob! We need that empathy compensates for ego here. Mods on other forums don't need to have all the knowledge the participants may have to do a good job.

    It would seem that we are running a free form runoff election with the entire population pool considered to be nominated. I do hope that the current mod team is prepared to veto a nominee in the event that democracy returns a blatantly inappropriate result. That being said, here is my list;
    Cogito Ergo Sum.
    Dywyddyr.
    Flick Montana.
    Paleoichneum.
    exchemist.
    Scheherazade.
    tk421.
    Strange.
    PhDemon.
    DianeG.
    MagiMaster.
    MacGyver1968.
    Falconer360.
    jrmonroe.
    Babe.
    M_Gabriela.

And, we really should have had a "pick 3" rule, or something.

has she said she wants to do it? It is one thing to be nominated but another to step up to the task.

Is that a list of nominations or nominees? "Pick 3" is that a run off?

Bob my understanding of the way this is being run is that anyone who has not declared themselves out is in the running and then if successful at the end of the process are offered the position and get to decide whether they want it, seems wrong to question people during the process as it could skew the results, just my opinion.
