Even as a joke, you shouldn't give him the approval. His constant political self-promotion demonstrates to me that he is not equipped for the task. I specifically cast my vote for people who didn't ask for the position and don't even seem to feel as though they are the best candidates (a quality that assures me they are). Someone who wants so desperately to be a moderator clearly has an ulterior motive as the job is neither glamorous nor typically gratifying.

I am honoured. Behind the scenes the moderators know how hard I work to keep the forum operating fairly. Thanks MarnixR.
I would just love to get the "yes" vote from Harold as well. I'd be happy losing if that happened.

It's just a shame in front of the scenes you try to prevent the forum operating as a science site with your ignorant posts...

Ninja'd this was obviously a reply to Bob...

All your votes should be assigned to me for a low blow as that from a potential moderator. Now that would be Biblical justice.

Which Bible are you reading? I don't recall that story, sorry.

Don't count yourself out just yet. The number of new mods selected will be increased due to the calibre of candidates nominated so far.

Doesn't really matter at this point. Everyone in that top 5 group would be qualified to pass judgment on nonsense. There isn't anyone among them I wouldn't feel comfortable calling a mod. Dywdyddrdywdy may be harsh, but he makes his points well and succinctly. You, on the other hand, would be a good voice of reason and offer a different insight on things. CES is very thoughtful, structured, and helpful in his presentation and posting style. Paleo always supports his comments and is very knowledgeable in several scientific areas. And PhDemon would be like unleashing the kraken on the cranks. All good choices, to me.

Correct. Besides, this forum could use with a little more help where moderating is concerned given how recent events have unfolded, plus it will alleviate the burden of tiptoeing around the more politically charged topics when there are more newbloods within the team who may be more decisive in how such threads have progressed.

It all seems quite a bit like the millenium bug, everyone is concerned, it could be catastrophic or it could just turn out to be nothing. The point is no one really knows what will happen until after the 18th.

Ah, that reminds of the dream job I applied for once.
Back in '99 there were adverts in one of the engineering magazines asking for candidates to apply for positions on a commission to report on likely problems (not solutions!) due to the millenium bug.
(I think it was actually in Nigeria - of all places).
What made it a dream job was the ad was placed in the September issue of the magazine, meaning a month or so before appointment, and the commission was not expected to produce its report for another eighteen months!
    Woohoo!
Sit back for 15 months or more banking the wages and then look at problems that had actually popped up.
I think someone, somewhere, hadn't quite grasped the concept...

Are you still smarting from being suspended this year. Obviously all tasks require a certain amount of learning, and I'd expect that. MarnixR is a very fair moderator and you are right out of place to say he shouldn't be one.
One more thing is certain and that is your opinion is not supported by fact.

I suffer from the Dunning-Kruger effect, as I need their magic potion of beer(s) to get anything done. But after the three step program to believe in oneself while sober, it makes me question a number of things.

BTW I did edit my post before you quoted and don't see any merit in yours.

I'm sure that marnixR would never have placed a nomination for bob if he thought that bob had a snowballs chance in hell of actually getting elected. If by some apocalyptic anti-miracle bob actually received enough votes I doubt that he would actually be installed as a mod. Hell, if Hitler were on a ballot in America some joker would vote for him just because.
Anyhow Beer w/ Straw, I value your contributions and would be saddened if you no longer posted here.

I officially enter a nomination for Beer w/ Straw.

Thank you to all those who have nominated me to this point and I am honored to be named in the company of others who have longer tenure and/or vastly stronger science backgrounds. There are many named who I feel certain would do an admirable job of moderating this forum based on the diversity of their knowledge and their demonstrated skill sets.

There is one who has impressed me from the start, by their communication style and the quality and content of their posts. Always informative and willing to take on extra assignments, but most of all, respectful in tone. I nominate Cogito Ergo Sum.

My next choice for moderator is an individual whom I know respectably well from a chess forum where they have been an excellent mentor in the game, which as most of you will be aware, requires considerable strategy. Whomever is successful in this campaign for the position of moderator may well find themselves in need of a delivery system which could best be described as a 'walking encyclopedia'. Were I to find myself in a moderator position, I would not hesitate to 'deploy the duck' in situations where I felt an acerbic education was warranted, nor would I pause to call in Cogito Ergo Sum, if I thought that diplomacy might better serve the cause, (not to imply that either individual is lacking in the prerequisite skills). I nominate Dywyddyr.

Moderating is not an ego game. It is a skill set that serves to promote fair treatment within a community, wherever that community may be. This is a fortunate forum, to have so many posters with such abilities.

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this process.

    Lolz!
    Beautifully worded.
And I suspect that not a few will read a particular meaning into that.

I would just love to get the "yes" vote from Harold as well. I'd be happy losing if that happened.
Considering he asked you to stop posting in this thread earlier and you ignored that request and you are still posting in it, what do you think the chances of that happening are?

    But stranger things have happened.

That aside, I don't think it is ethical for you to be trying to drum up votes for yourself. That kind of self promotion is really nasty and is just more confirmation that you are not suited for the role.

    1 vote for Sche.
I was expecting her vote(s) to be somewhat nearer the deadline... ('cos wimmin keep you waiting!)

Oh, and one for Beer w/ Straw (because no-one should lose out to RobbityBob).

If elected, my first action would be to resign. I am trying to drink less and the only way I'd be an active mod would be to get loaded.

    I vote

    Paleoichneum
    Dywyddyr
    Cogito Ergo Sum
    PhDemon

    And Mayflow

PhDemon once suffered an erasure from drunk modding, and all was forgiven. Have you thought about forgoing the straw?

Another great post shehehazade, totally agree with Tranquille, you will make a excellent choice. Also agree with who you voted for, think it would be much better for everyone if the top 3 got the job, make people's voting easier for sure, but would also be a real asset for the forum. We seem to have lost the last 3 Mods and 3 more would kind of make sense.

Haemorrhoid probable sock alert! This attempted vote should be discounted.

    (Reported, of course.)

Even if we did not discount the vote, it would not have a significant effect on the top 5. We already know that members scheherazade and Dywyddyr will become the new moderators. Of course, a new account that immediately rants about this forum, is indeed suspicious (and I reported it).
They will do a good job, as I am sure all of the top five would!!

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this process.

It is difficult for me to express my gratitude you evoked with your comment. Anyhow, this re-affirms that the other members have made an excellent decision by nominating you. I hereby nominate you too, and I hope you accept the job if offered. With this in my mind, this is the current top 5:

    Dywyddyr 23
    scheherazade 22
    Cogito Ergo Sum 20
    PhDemon 15
    Paleoichneum 13

I'm afraid I can't stretch to a porsche or even the furry dice, you might have to settle for a pint of something cold from me. Seriously though well done.

So are the top three going to become mods now? Or the top five? I forgot how many mods we decided to elect. I personally think that the top 9 would be great choices. At the very least the top five simply because each one of them brings something unique to the table.

May I recommend that since, firstly, the voting is over and secondly, there is a thread for congratulating the new mods, that this thread be closed.

Since the voting is closed and the results can be discussed in another thread, I concur that this thread ought to be closed.
