Janus would be an excellent choice. He is very knowledgeable , calm, composed , very similar to Markus.

Bob my understanding of the way this is being run is that anyone who has not declared themselves out is in the running and then if successful at the end of the process are offered the position and get to decide whether they want it, seems wrong to question people during the process as it could skew the results, just my opinion.
They might not be aware they have been nominated. Someone ought to to get all nominees to respond. And besides you can vote for more than one person. Scherezade has always appeared compassionate to me but opinionated enough to be moderator???

    Janus is already a moderator.

We need to do this from time to time, because people lose interest and move on to other things, and because we tend to have a lot of older members (like me) with a limited shelf life.

    Rules will be as follows:
For purposes of this process, "nominate" and "vote" means the same thing.
    1. All members including moderators can nominate one or more members. There is no limit on the number of people you can nominate, but of course you may only vote for each member once.
    2. Nominations will be closed in 2 weeks (end of the day on October 9).
    3. The top 2 vote getters who do not decline the nomination will be promoted to moderator.
    4. If you nominated somebody in the other unofficial thread, please re-submit here so that I won't have to sort out the serious nominations from the frivolous.
    ETA:
    5. You cannot vote for yourself.
Yes, I am aware and I thank all those who have nominated me.

There are a number of other excellent candidates in the running and unless Harold changes the dates for this procedure, I will share my nominations a bit later in the process.

If an ignoramus like Bob is made a mod I'll be leaving... a mod of a science forum should at least understand the scientific method and not be a clown with delusions of competence... just saying...

I officially nominate the following members for moderator. They are defenders of science, fighters of woo, devotees of the scientific method, intolerant of willful ignorance, and very knowledgeable, clever and intelligent members:

    - Dywyddyr
    - PhDemon
    - Howard Roark
    - tk421

There would be a mass exodus. Like someone yelling "Fire!" in a packed 20,000 seat theatre. Like the crush after a soccer game.

I'm just wondering why Robbity doesn't know the outcome of this nomination process. After all, he is a self-proclaimed psychic with premonition abilities. He sees things.

"A few" is akin to saying the Tōhoku earthquake was just a mild ground tremor.

    Where would they be?

Was it present when you whined that we didn't take your monkeys having sex with pigs to make homo sapiens seriously? Or when you argued that Earth was a water giant and captured the moon as it came past and lost a lot of its water to god knows where and when you then refused to accept that the Earth and Moon actually collided and then reformed into what they are today and threw a wobbly at the thought that this planet came from absolute destruction? I still have vivid flashbacks of trying to get you to understand what ring species was..

While you may have the best of intentions, your lack of knowledge and understanding would result in a lot of conflict on this site and people would simply leave. And it would not be a few. No offense, but your ideas are too kooky and while you try to put on the nice nice persona, you are not suited to the role of moderating a science forum such as this one. If this site was all about pseudoscience or religion, you'd fit right in as a moderator. But it is not.

Thanks so that is two votes.
That's two nominations. If we were doing this properly, any nominations more than "seconded" still amount to "nominated".

If the choices aren't obvious by informal consensus, I suggest another thread just for voting.
In the OP nominations were equivalent to votes.

Instead of reacting like that, why don't you pretend you're the perfect moderator (that you said you would be) and handle this discourse like a good moderator would.

BTW, I've seen some really goofy posts made by you -- and you were serious -- not playing around.

Dywyddyr and PhDemon would certainly add an intriguing dynamic to the ethos of the forum if they were to become moderators.

    I like it.

I'd like to add my votes for them both, too.

It's a shame I'm not as active on here as I used to be, I'd like to think I'd have been a good candidate. But then I don't have a background in the sciences to be suitable enough for the role.

In my head, I use a German "w", and the y's are vowels.

Sadly those threads and those posts continue to exist in pseudoscience.

My point, Robittybob1, is that you are wholly unsuited to the role of moderator of a science forum.

This thread was meant to be about moderator nominations and you have posted the most in it, compared to anyone else. This thread is not about you or how good you think you will be. So please stop what you are calling campaigning and allow people to post their opinions freely.

I will also include Dywyddyr and PhDemon in that list if they haven't opted out.

I tried to keep track of all the votes given up to now in post #69 and I will continue to update it. You may find it useful.

i see i've omitted a few people that i'd like to add to my list of nominations :

    Ascended
    Zwirko
    scheherazade

as for counting, Harold, i wouldn't worry too much - if both Cogito and myself try to keep track of the numbers and we can agree on them, that should be ok
on the other hand, Bob, the continuous background commentary appears rather superfluous to requirements

my top of the list looks as follows as of this post:

    Dywyddyr - 11
    scheherazade - 10
    Cogito Ergo Sum - 9
    Flick Montana - 7
    Paleoichneum - 6
    tk421 - 6
    PhDemon - 6

You included the mention of member pineapples in the number of votes for member Dywyddyr. I was not sure if it was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, so I excluded it (he meant it as a serious nomination, so I added his vote). I will change it in the list. Also, I received ten votes, namely from Daecon (#2), Robittybob1 (#3), Howard Roark (#7), Implicate Order (#12), Tranquille (#13), from you (#14), pineapples (#63), GiantEvil (#97), Markus Hanke (#137) and mat5592 (#138).

d'oh ! i hadn't cottoned on that CES was supposed to be you !

if you find any major discrepancies, please PM them rather than cluttering up this thread
i do keep track of who nominated whom in what post, so we should be able to compare

Er, just to skew things away from me...
I'd go with whoever gets the job (assuming none of the nutcases do 1).
But Strange and tk421 definitely should be contenders for the more sciencey parts of the forum.

This isn't (nutcases excepted) intended as a slur on anyone else 2: it's just that people aren't my thing and I couldn't really say who'd be good at modding until I've seen them in action.

1 E.g. (as one example) the guy who nominated himself in this thread.
2 Ooh, did I just manage to make a back-handed insult there?

I agree. They are always fair I their comments and Flick is too. Many good choices on that list.

But who in the hell nominated ME? *chuckle*

    Correct.

    My serious nominations were:
    DianeG
    GiantEvil
    Billvon

I suggested these as I think they are good candiates and might have been possibly overlooked.

{edit} Once you have compiled a shortlist, would it be a good idea to post a poll choosing from that shortlist?

I agree with almost all the nominations and I'm sure the individual(s) who are chosen will do a good job in a task that is not always easy.
I nominate Zwirko as,after a quick reading, I am surprised he/she has not been mentioned all that often.

on the other hand, Bob, the continuous background commentary appears rather superfluous to requirements

my top of the list looks as follows as of this post:

    Dywyddyr - 11
    scheherazade - 10
    Cogito Ergo Sum - 9
    Flick Montana - 7
    Paleoichneum - 6
    tk421 - 6
    PhDemon - 6
    Thanks, guys.

That's too bad, you are highly qualified, you are in the same tier with Janus and Markus. I am the first one to nominate you, hope that you would reconsider.

Been away for about 3 weeks (Vancouver) and missed all this moderator election talk. Are the elections complete? If not then where can I vote or nominate?

    Rules will be as follows:
For purposes of this process, "nominate" and "vote" means the same thing.
    1. All members including moderators can nominate one or more members. There is no limit on the number of people you can nominate, but of course you may only vote for each member once.
    2. Nominations will be closed in 2 weeks (end of the day on October 9).
    3. The top 2 vote getters who do not decline the nomination will be promoted to moderator.
    4. If you nominated somebody in the other unofficial thread, please re-submit here so that I won't have to sort out the serious nominations from the frivolous.

    Right here, zinjanthropos.

Nominations and elections at the same time is an interesting twist. It's like a by-election that doesn't affect the parliamentary majority.

Interesting, perhaps, but it's the way we've always done it. I think it works well enough. You have to be smart about your voting, and only vote for people who you really want to win. Nominate too many, and you will be cancelling out a vote for your preferred nominee.

Here's what I find interesting: What if you vote for someone who eventually declines the nomination, especially after all ballots have been tabulated? Isn't that unfair, the wasted vote(s) might have gone to someone more deserving than the eventual winner or the guy who doesn't want the job? The person wielding the most power in the election is the one who garners enough votes to win but declines in order to get the third place person into power. If the elected person doesn't like who will get in if he/she pulls out, and doesn't decline the nomination, then you have a moderator who doesn't want the job.

Much as I hate to say it, the only one I can think of for moderator would be the duck. He is always on his game when it comes to science, even if he is an ass.

That Daffy Duck character who cares about nothing but being annoying!? I think he must have chosen his username by randomly hitting the keyboard with his knuckles.

    I vote AGAINST Dywyddyr
    .

I am seriously considering making him the first and only member of my ignore list. Who can tell if he knows about science or not? It's too difficult to see beyond his snarky remarks. If he knew anything about science, why not patiently explain to those who err how they are mistaken rather than just knocking them down? He's so utterly negative that he is in a class by himself in terms of discouraging new users to post more than one or two times before they run for cover. Of course, I have no concrete evidence of what I say, but it's easy to guess when he's so often there to troll an innocent new user who is 'just asking' a question because s/he values the expertise of the more knowledgeable forum members. Surely he's responsible (culpable) for more members leaving this forum than anyone else. Make him a moderator!!!??? Better to permanently ban such a creature.
And what does the Lord require of you but to love justice, to be merciful and to walk humbly with Him?

Considering you joined 9 days ago, doesn't seem like a fair assumption to your claims regarding dywyddyr. Just saying.

Speaking of nominations, I have not yet proposed anyone in this thread.
I hereby nominate members Paleoichneum and exchemist.

Also, if I counted the votes correctly, the current top 3 looks like this:
    1. Dywyddyr (14 votes)
    2. Scheherazade (12 votes)
    3. Cogito Ergo Sum (10 votes)

It's looking pretty good. Thank god for the sanity of the forum. IMO each of these 3 would be rippers and I hope they all say yes......but must not preempt....*crosses fingers* :-)

After being here a while I can certainly vouch for the duck's excellent knowledge of mainstream science.

Na, the duck is a necessary evil on this forum and he is an extremely regular participant who keeps the pond clean. While I initially was terrified of the bellicose canard, I now certainly appreciate his tireless efforts in raising the bar of this site. There is a degree of 'attitude' initiation that needs to be undertaken on this forum and if you closely notice the modus operandi of the duck, he leaves the genuine enquirers alone and this can be attributed to his excellent general knowledge. Of course in entering any social group it shows a degree of respect to at least be humble in your approach and learn the ropes before you should expect community acceptance. This is just plain good manners. If you observe this etiquette you can enjoy a prosperous future on this forum but if you enter this forum like a bull at a gate, it's gonna end in tears I tell's ya with a duck bill inserted in any vacant hole :-))

So, I can't read back to posts in an earlier time? Early on I was struck by the negative vibes coming off the person in question, and I decided to investigate if he is always so. Yes, he very often, even predominantly, does make cynical and unfriendly posts.

Even if I joined five minutes ago, I am a member like anyone else and I have one vote. Please note that I made no positive vote in favor of anyone. I wish only to cast a vote against the candidate named. So what's the problem?
And what does the Lord require of you but to love justice, to be merciful and to walk humbly with Him?

    You've got that wrong.
I care about many things: but one of the things I don't care about is whether or not I'm annoying.
    There's a difference.

I think he must have chosen his username by randomly hitting the keyboard with his knuckles.
Which says much about how much thought you put into things.
(And how much you bother about finding out).
Then again, it is easier to make uninformed guesses, isn't it?

troll an innocent new user who is 'just asking' a question
I think you'll find that I'm rarely negative when someone asks a question.
It's when they start making assertions and assumptions that I get annoyed.

Surely he's responsible (culpable) for more members leaving this forum than anyone else.
    Really?
Would that be another uninformed guess?

Sir Duckness, when I arrived, you were tough on me a few times, but when you got that I didn't understand and I asked questions, you always answered, though I had to ask you to use theatre whore terms. *S*. BUT YOU ANSWERED.

I have grown fond of you.....(and your feathers)....I have made a pillow from some of your feathers.....and embroidered SIR DUCKY'S DOWN on it *ducking*.....sorry couldn't resist.

I'd vote for you in a second, but you have indicated you don't want the position.

If I recall correctly 1, I also PM'd you at one point to indicate that you'd taken umbrage at some reply which you thought was denigrating you but was, in fact, supporting your earlier comments.

I'd vote for you in a second, but you have indicated you don't want the position.
Not quite: I pointed out that I may not be everyone's cup of tea in that position.
I did state that, if "chosen" I would step up.

1 And, this being me, I KNOW I recall correctly.

Senseless wordplay will get you nowhere. I am trying to be fair. If I positively nominated anyone, I fear it will be said I voted twice. I feel strongly enough against Daffy Duck that I don't mind subtracting from his total.

Am I still entitled to a positive vote? If an official moderator says that I am, please inform me here, and I will make a positive selection.

Your negative vote isn't going to count, so go ahead and make your selections.
You can vote as many times as you want, as long as it's not for the same person.

I don’t post often (and rarely engage in debate) but he’s set me straight in the past once or twice with some little sciencey misconceptions of my own.

as "strange" does not seem to respond to this position, so I nominate CES for his balanced approach towards "new ideas" in science. i learn from your research, specially your peer review links, which you often provide with your comments. Thanks for being so informative.

Hello, my fellow citizens of the world. My name is Flick Montana and I want to be your next Grand High Moderator of the Trash Can.

When I come to power, I promise to mete out swift and merciless punishment to everyone I don't like. I will ensure as many threads as possible end up in the Trash Can so that I may spread hate and terror across vast swathes of this forum. I will immediately enact an order to ban Dywyddyr for life unless he comes up with a name I can pronounce. Puns will be subject to a lifetime ban (I'm looking at you, PhDemon). Finally, if you elect me as your new overlord, I promise your death will be swift.

I don't take it personally. I just have no respect for people who show no respect to others. If he's "done it" to me, I have forgotten. I'm not one to put forth theories, I just try to inform and entertain if I can.

I disagree that he goes for the ball (balls, did you mean ) He aims to belittle. I often see him being insulting just because he doesn't seem to understand civility. My point is that posting members will learn nothing if there is even a hint of being talked down to. There is always a 'smarter-than-thou' feel to every one of his posts, even when he is wrong about something. I feel many new people will have a bad first impression from his tirades, even if older members have 'learned' to like him. Why should anyone have to learn that? I'm fairly new here, and the chief issue I have with this forum is the presence of an abrasive troll who jumps on every new question (from a new poster) in a very unwelcoming way.

Moderating necessarily requires moderate behavior. I don't think, what the heck's his username? Dywyddyr? is capable of such. By his on admission he is one of the most 'difficult' members here - maybe even THE most difficult. Read his signature, see his icon, observe that he refers to himself as a genius! Even if that were true, it is hardly tactful to mention it.

So I vote RobbityBob1. He is pleasant, well spoken and respectful to all. And he has a great slogan, which I will be making up as I write it:

If not Bob Robbity - Nobody ought to be!

(paid for by the committee to elect Robbity moderator)
And what does the Lord require of you but to love justice, to be merciful and to walk humbly with Him?

    QED.
To get respect you earn it.
    Posting nonsense doesn't do that.

    He aims to belittle.
    Wrong.
Learn to read the words without ascribing emotions.

a 'smarter-than-thou' ... even when he is wrong about something
    Examples please.

    Yeah...
A joke's not a joke if you have to explain.
Try looking again at what it actually says.
(And, for someone who claims to have gone back and read a large number of my posts you seem to have missed quite a few).

So I vote RobbityBob1. He is pleasant, well spoken and respectful to all.
And he's an unscientific crank with huge problems in reading context and understanding basic concepts.

    I agree!
In terms of his knowledge of science his posts are far superior to mine and this also applies to the "intellectual" who sent in post 173 and a few others.

Perhaps the Trash Can should have its own moderator who would not be entitled to moderate in other sub forums (maybe the Trash Can habitués could even elect their own representative?).His or her remit would be to ensure the basic minimum in the postings (legality etc) .

Then the other mods could wash their hands of the most difficult (and tiresome) postings. Maybe it is a bit like how Britain sent its criminals to Australia.
