JG has requested to be promoted from his current moderator position to that of a regular member. This was entirely his decision and he is welcome to his old job back whenever he wants it.

Pity, I think he did a good job. But it must take its toll, I imagine, so not something one wants to do indefinitely.

A shame there's no way to buy him a virtual beer over the internet.

I would like to thank John Galt for his services as a moderator to this forum and I hope he has more time to contribute his own thoughts as a regular member in a non-official capacity.

(Hopefully this graphic isn't in violation of forum standards. )

Cheers for all the hard work you put into it John, your efforts were very much appreciated.

I personally think you have done a great job JG. Thanks you for patience and diligence as a moderator. I hope you continue to be involved with this forum as a member as you add excellent content to this forum and it would be a great loss to see you go entirely.

It seems that we are saying more goodbye's than hello's at the moment for some of the more active members here such as Marcus and JG. We need a forum sausage sizzle.

"I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello" :-))

Thanks for all the hard work John! When I came back to this forum recently I was glad to see that you were still here. I hope you continue to be active here, you're one of the people here that makes this site worth visiting.

It will be interesting to hear from the man himself what the issue really was. In my opinion he was trying far too hard in the few weeks since his long time away. There was something behind the scenes more than just our usual bickering.
I just hope he recovers, but I have tried to express sympathy but he'll still turn on you like a wounded bull. He takes no prisoners.

If he wants us to know he will tell us. Jeez. Why don't you worry about your own numerous flaws.

If I was a healthy unharmed bull I would turn on you and mash you into the ground -- and be really pleased with myself.

    John Galt is awesome.

    I truly appreciate him.

He was the first to welcome me and had the sense of humor when I told him, that when I saw, "JOHN GALT WAS HERE" on a bathroom door that I thought of him.

He might not always agree with me, and that is fine, because he was always honest and fair!.

SIR JOHN GALT! You were and are one amazing man.

Whatever reason you made this decision, I am sure it was made with the wisdom and clarity you have often provided this theatre whore with when explaining things.

Thank you. Mahalo nui loa and hui hou.

I honestly do not know what to say. It feels to me like this forum just lost something.

In a sense, he has left. Member John Galt was one of the earliest members on this forum, which gave him much experience on how to handle delicate situations, such as arguments between two or more respected members, members who clearly suffered from a mental disorder, etc. His recent statement (cf. post #2) that he wanted to act more strictly, and be less forgiven for members who decreased the quality of this forum, was very promising; it was supported by several members (including me). Hence his choice to step down feels like a loss, since I hoped that his approach would be fruitful for this forum. I am certain that, whatever motives he has for his decision, we ought to respect his choice for coming down from an authoritative position, despite him being irreplaceable.

I am still here I did recently resign from The Physics Forum though, in an effort to reduce the overall time I spend online, and to be honest I am glad of it since it was starting to become stressful. Being a moderator can be a very thankless job at times since you have to reconcile many wildly conflicting interests while trying to remain as impartial as possible; since I started moderating forums I have been called pretty much every name under the sun, have been threatened with legal action, and have once ( not here though ) even received personal threats. It is easy to become disillusioned with it, since we are doing this as a hobby only. However, out of all places I used to be active on, I still enjoy moderating this one here the most; I have just reduced my overall activity to be able to focus on my studies more.

I think people should not be defined by the position they hold - JG is still a ( hopefully ) active member, and will have much more to contribute to this community, without having to deal with the drama. To me it doesn't feel like he left !

Good to hear that you will still be around a bit. You are very much a big part of this community.

Yup...I eat seafood as part of my diet, and very very rarely ( once every few weeks or so ) I would still have a little bit of meat as well - I have chosen to be flexitarian not because of any ideological reasons, but simply because I feel better doing it, so I choose to retain the flexibility of making exceptions to the rule every so often. Obviously I cannot speak for others, but this works well for me

I bet John Galt is not his real name, any more than Ophiolite.

But hey, Och Aye John. I respect.

i was making a joke relevant to the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. Instead of "what is the meaning of life?" I substituted for "42" as a tangent to the quoted post.

Oh, sorry. I should have known. You're thinking is several levels deep. Good one.
