There is a button in the top menu which takes you to a random thread every time. It was added a month ago, but I am not sure a lot of members noticed it.

I didn't notice it and wouldn't have used it if I had.

It works like stumbleupon. You might stumble upon some very interesting threads which you'd never see otherwise.

Could be the source of some of the ancient threads that have been resurrected? I ask because when I tried it I got stuff from 2008.

Might it be better to only look at random threads from the past couple months?

I have to agree with lynx_fox, is there a way to limit it to threads that are only a couple of months old at most? It has been general policy to not allow the necro-ing of old threads so this would seem to contradict that.

Feel free to resurrect ancient threads. What's the harm?

Past couple months filter can be added, I'll have to look where to look [in the code]. I'll do it if I find it trivial.

More harm then apparently you are aware of. Dead horses stink real bad after a few years, especially when it winds up creating duplicates of more current discussions on the same subject. Usually the posters in the discussion are long gone, so the resurrection serves no useful purpose, and in fact dilutes the scientific discussion.

In addition to the "posters are usually long gone" part, this forum was essentially reset with the software migration in July, which erased all thread watchlists that members had compiled. Therefore no one gets contacted if a thread is necro-ed from earlier then July.

    You guys are right.

I looked into the code. The link now takes you to a random thread of last 75 days. It takes into account the last reply's date not the thread starting date.
