Without wrap up the previous topic(culture preservation),

I want to fire a question haunting in my mind, which also becomes the main argument of a bunch of filibuster.

"Why public opinion is important/ what do we want from public opinions, in a country which is not a direct democracy?"

I dont know but I think that King Louis XVI found out the hard way that public opinion can sometimes matter even in an absolute monarchy.

Public opinion matters because the government is supposed to be by, of, and for the people. Direct democracy is to be aspired to imo, but you need a population that is educated, able to criticize and free to speek, and also to have a variety of sources of information which is not the case with media being overwelmingly influenced by a small group of people who do their best to shape public opinion in a way that reinforces their wealth and influence.

I think the reason that countries do not have direct democracy is (at least in part) because it is not practical. In other words, it would be too difficult to have millions of people vote on every issue so we have representatives to vote on our behalf. Only major issues tend to have referendums.

As icewendigo pointed out, direct democracy is something to aspire to (for many of us, anyways) and listening to public opinion is one way to do that. Besides, politicians need to get re-elected.

Why? don't you think public opinion will be affected by media? That's why we have Campaigning Spending Limit...

Are you saying the public is educated enough to weight out the balance and spot the difference in nature of two candidates?
