If you could identify yourself with a Greek God
Which one would it be?
And why? _________________ xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Athena - I loved her interventions at Troy (I'm a fan of the Hellenes in general, and the two Aiases in particular). |

Zues.
No reason why, all stories about them are false right so I'm not going to put one down. _________________ "There is no knowledge, that is not power" - Ralph Waldo Emerson. |

| Oh dear. I've spent too much time trying to wrap my brain around marine microorganisms. I'm afraid I'll have to go with Poseidon. |

Easy. None of them. The character in Greek mythology that I identify myself with is Sisyphus, who although not a very nice person, for the most part, had the temerity to challenge the gods and think himself equal to them, calling them to account despite their power to condemn him forever. Besides, I loved Albert Camus' essay "the myth of Sisyphus".
This character should be a natural favorite of most atheists as well.
As a Christian, my identification with Sisyphus is found in my refusal to worship a God of power, for I am ready and willing to flip off a god that demands obedience with threats of eternal damnation like a criminal waving a gun around and expecting that to be sufficient for an expectation of obedience. Whatever I might do when faced with a real life gunman, I am not inclined to cower beneath the type of intellectual blackmail that some Christians use with their threats of eternal suffering.
I am sure that this is a sentiment that the atheists here can well appreciate too.
Thus my being Christain is founded on the demand that God must be worthy of my regard in order for me to acknowledge that He is God, but given that He is worthy He has my regard without any other condition or demand. In other words, I will worship God because He is good and not because of promises or threats, which it seems to me, can be made by a devil, for all I know. Thus I believe in a God of goodness and love which basically means that it is goodness and love which I admire and aspire to. By comparision to these, power and knowledge are trash, and a god that waves these around has my contempt. _________________ See my physics of spaceflight simulator at http://www.relspace.astahost.com

One could say the same for Christianity. But your indoctrination will obviously disagree.
With respect to Zeus, calling him Zues is like calling Jesus Jizes, how much outrage do you think would be caused if that was printed in a newspaper, how much protesting would go on?

I see two people have sentenced me to death because I spelled Zeus wrong, I thought I did spell it wrong when I typed it. Oh well my mistake, sorry Zeus. Oh why am I apologising to myself?

LOL, I spell it wrong all the time as well. I can only remember that the e comes before the u if I pretend they named the Suez Canal after him but they flipped it. Works for me. |
