How we think is determined by the "culture" we were brough up in. In the modern world, we have a sort of common culture or World View and way of thinking. It consists of two things:
(1) the religious heritage. In the West, Christianity forms that. However, it is mainly a "liberalized" version of the faith.
(2) the secular beliefs. With the old faiths liberalized, people can also adopt the secular beliefs ("Secular HUmanism"). They consist in our devotion to "freedom" "democracy," "rights," the "free enterprise economic system", "free will", individualism and science.
Both the religion and the secular beliefs are all considered to be "Truth" but they have always changed, so "truth" is for them quite relative!!
All human history is filled with different beliefs that come and go. Nothing lasts for ever and everything changes with time. All that we believe will someday be changed.
What is happening now, for example, is that religious reaction is apart of the current US Administration and it is deliberately promoting failing policies in Islam in order to discredit the concept of "democracy." It is deliberately showing the world that it does not work in either Afganistan (now the world's major scource of heroin) and Iraq (in civil war). So, people are being led to go to the only alternative, the old scriptures and religious fanaticism.
This means that the unity wrought by a common world secular belief system is coming apart and the world is being divided into religious blocks each with its own atomic bombs.
Anyone interested in the future of the human race should consider this problem seriously. They need to become informed and able to do something about it.

in my opinion you raise some interesting topics for discussion. i might question being in education.
speaking as American, i have long questioned "creationism" as a soul existence theory taught in public school, then Catholic school by name have their view.
Mr. Bush happens to be of a religion. his government and his advisor's should not set policy on these believes. i happen to think they do not.
attempting to spread democracy or freedom and human right to people, if not a human desire, is a religious enemy. free and democratically oriented people will elect like minded people, not the people that free or attempted to free from tyranny or delusional dictators. in the US this happens to be Christan, in Iraq, Afghanistan the people happen to be Muslim. neither is going to change, whom ever is elected to govern their affairs, nor should they.
now what we know of Islam, the laws and people comes fro those that speak for them, not our government or our media. we hear lots of things under our system make little sense.
1. we know Methodist and Baptist have differing view, but are Christan.
we know Islam has differing view but war over the difference.
2. we are told by the Muslim cleric and national Islamic leaders, that Jewish people are this and that. they should be and so on...just what is an infidel.
3. we are told kids in Islamic Schools are taught certain things, basically according to the clergy. just ten minutes ago, on a Fox New Documentary we saw these "men of God", say things i wont go into...
4. we are told woman have no rights, under law. that men are the only ones allowed to worship freely and men are superior.
i really don't know for sure, but the people we hear from are those that rule the nest and its hard to ignore.
i hope this thread gets into the main stream and discussed. i and many Americans need a birds eye opinion of just whats going on... |

This is an interesting thought. I am not convinced it is a deliberate policy, but the net effect could be much the same.
Certainly the war on terror has been used as an excuse to introduce draconian security measures that are nothing less than a rape of our individual freedoms. This is as true in the UK as it is in the US. |

Which individual freedoms are being "raped" exactly? My life hasn't personally changed much other than getting to the airport a little earlier to catch my flight - no big deal. But the effects of 9/11 were stone-cold real to a hell of a lot of people, and that seems more important to me than some of the trivial freedoms people are complaining about being infringed upon. It's entirely possible there are more serious issues and legit complaints of which I'm not aware but personally, I have no complaints and I'd easily give up more if it meant preventing another potential atrocity. |
