I had high hopes for the XM8, It really looked and had the features of a Next-Gen small arm. So why was it cancelled?

I'm not sure, seems like it happened rather suddenly following hassling about bids. Confused Things could always change ... I hope so anyway, it is one cool lightweight assault rifle.

Looks alittle old but might as well ansewer, the XM8 was a prototype assualt rifle looking at replacing the M-16/A4 and M-4 weapon platforms.

During the time of testing the weapon was taken upon multiple operations with SOF and conventional forces where it was found to have problems proforming in adverse conditions. In a general study done by the US Army it was found that for the money the weapon was far from worth it. I can say that some Special Operations Soldiers have detested the weapon as a useless weapon left over from the OICW program.

Besides that the U.S. is trying to escape the 5.56x45mm weapon platform due to many soldiers complaing of the small stopping power on orgainic targets.

It looks like the 6.8 Remington SPC round is a great contender I have heard nothing but good reports on the system.
