With so many US air lines filing for bankruptcy over the last couple of years one has to wonder what the future of the industry is going to hold. Will the US end up with one or two corporations that control all air travel in the US, or will a bunch of smaller companies run tight limited fleets to help offset the holes left by the larger companies going out of business. America West is talking about reducing it's fleet after it just filed chapter 11. Does this all go back to rising fuel costs, or are people just not travelling enough? Perhaps the competition in prices is driving them to not make a profit at all.
Anyone have some good info on why this has happened and what the predictions for the future might be? |

| If you will also notice that over the past 30 years new airlines have come onto line that are run more efficiantly than those that are goin under. We now have allot more airlines up and running than we did in the 1960's where there were only 5 major airlines transporting everyone that fles in America. Today we have over 20 companies! |

I currently work with many people who either have worked for major airlines or still are. From what they tell me and what I have discovered for myself, many airlines are managed very poorly. They are usually very top heavy and have inflated saleries, pensions, and benifits for all; from the top down. Part of this is a by product of Unions and part of it is managers caring more for themselves then the company. I hope the gov. stays out of the issue because the market will adjust itself. The companies that can't cut the mustard will be gone. There may be some shift to more regional airlines but change is a good thing, it keeps us on our feet.
